Mode Shifting and Accidentals

Accidentals in music are modifications of the seven basic pitches.
I present three of them in this video: Sharps, flats, and naturals.
Love them or hate them, accidentals are necessary to have 49 different scales
to choose from, by shifting the seven basic modes from one basic pitch to another as the tonic.

Around 3:12 you say 7 different possible tonic notes. We really have 12 tonics to choose from. 12 tonics x 7 modes = 84 possible scales.

What about scales and modes based off of sharpened or flattened notes? Enharmonically, there are 12 chromatic pitches. 12 pitches × 7 modes = 84 scales/modes.

Some keys, like F# minor (dorian), are commonly used in western music. This video does not account for sharp and flat keys, thus the "51 total number of modes" he refers to is technically incorrect. It's a great simplification for learning purposes, but I don't want people to be mislead.

If we choose not to think of the scales enharmonically, but my its labeling system, the number will get even larger. Although the total number of sounding modes in our tonal system is 84.
