Huge Firefighter Axe Restoration

Huge Firefighter axe restoration of a big old and raw rusty German metal cleaver. See me restore this tool and engrave some custom engraving work adding a burning skull to the face of the axe.

ABOUT THE FIREFIGHTER AXE
This Is a fine old German firefighter axe from Wiebelhaus in the heart of the Sauerland region of Germany. They have a long family history of making handcrafted tools. I bought this tool for around 30$ at an auction a few years back. Now it is time to restore this massive axe and make it beautiful again.

Did you know that a firefighter axe is one of the most common tools among firefighters. Firemen often use two kinds of axes, the flat head fire axe and the pick head fire axe, the one with a spike like this one I restore in the video. They often use them to gain entry thru a door, window or chop hole in a wall.

ABOUT THE AXE RESTORATION
I started by removing the handle from the axe. This handle is protected and secured with two irons which holds the axe handle steady on place and at the same time they protect the handle in rough use and abuse. I sandblasted the axe using aluminum oxide as my sandblasting material.

I grinded a new 40-degree angle edge. A firefighter axe doesn’t need to be super sharp – it just needs to be strong so it can break down doors, windows and walls during a fire.

I added a very cool laser engraving on the cheek of each side of the axe head. The motive for the laser engraving was a burning skull head. I couldn’t choose between a bright metal skull or a black metal skull so I did both! – so please tell me which one you like the most!

I gave the edge and the spike a quick polish. I grinded the axe handle in my homemade wood lathe and toned the wood darker. Finally, I put the axe together and I gave the handle some Nordic teak oil.

I am really satisfied with this restoration. I think this came out very good and the engravings make a rough feeling to this old German tool!

Thanks for watching my channel. See you soon.
Best wishes and stay safe ❤ Martin

This is why I always come back. Not just because you still keep the original pieces, but you come up with creative ways when you don't have all the proper machinery. The DYI wood lathe is what impressed me more than the restoration.

31 years professional firefighter. Retired Captain. I never saw an axe so beautiful! That has some age to it for sure. The pointy end looks entirely different. Ours had more of a thick curved knife shape. This one has a medieval spike kind of thing. You did a great job! Regarding the etching: really nice and clean, but they both sort of look like stickers a teenage boy would put on his biology textbook. The skull ring on your index finger (on the right) is quite nice. Love your channel. One of your 5.46 million!

Nice job, and I enjoyed the 'thunder storm' sound track. Yes, the vise needs to be the next project. Your reversible work bench is brilliant.

I preferred the lighter engraving of the two, but they were both very acceptable. Outstanding!

Seeing you restore fire axes reminds me of 8 years ago as a child firefighter. But I think you do a good job of restoring fire axes!
