Many people claim the names of Genesis 5 actually teach the Gospel. The claim is if you take the meaning of the names we get, "Man appointed mortal sorrow, the blessed God shall come down preaching his death shall bring the despairing rest. How truthful is this?

You don’t need to go Genesis 5 to find the gospel, go to Genesis 3. It’s easier to read and it doesn’t break your head. By reading the gospel it’s easy to infer that the woman’s seed appointed to crush the serpent’s head while simultaneously being bitten is Jesus.

The bible is filled with so many wonderful and beautiful nuggets odd when people try to make them up.

When I first heard this I looked up the names in a Google Hebrew names translator to verify. The definition of 9 of the 10 names was spot on, and one was questionable, but reasonable, and as a whole told the story of Jesus. That, my friends, is good enough for me! You look it up for yourself and realize that Jesus is truly Lord of Lords.

When I first heard this argument, it sounded so amazing that I wanted to believe it, but suspected there were some liberties taken with the translation. Thanks for clearing it up.
God’s Word is already astonishing in its revelations and has no need of extra inspiration from us.

Words in Hebrew can mean many different things. I looked each of these names up individually and this “hidden message” is true. Enoch means “trained”. The name Enosh means “mortal, frail, or miserable”. Kenan means “to mourn, lament, or sorrow after”.

“He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care. Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all. He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth. Unjustly condemned, he was led away. No one cared that he died without descendants, that his life was cut short in midstream. But he was struck down for the rebellion of my people. He had done no wrong and had never deceived anyone. But he was buried like a criminal; he was put in a rich man’s grave. But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the Lord’s good plan will prosper in his hands. When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins. I will give him the honors of a victorious soldier, because he exposed himself to death. He was counted among the rebels. He bore the sins of many and interceded for rebels.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭53:3-12‬ ‭NLT‬‬
This was written around 700 years before Jesus came into the earth, yet it describes His life perfectly.
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16
God loves you so much and showed that by sending His Son to die for us so that we may inherit eternal life. We deserve hell but He gave us heaven through faith in Jesus. He took the punishment we deserved and by putting our faith in Him we can be saved. The Key To Eternal Life:

What I found after much research was this:

Adam - man
Seth - appointed or placed
Enosh - frailty
Kenan - acquire
Mahalalel - praise of God
Jared - he descends
Enoch - Dedicated, Trained
Methusaleh - One who was sent
Lamech - powerful or to make low
Noah - rest

So some of it does fit what people are saying based on my research but I do see some liberties taken to make it completely make sense. Either way, I don't really see myself using this as a tool to plant seeds with people. There's plenty of other places to do that.

Matthew Henry in his commentary wrote that Methuselah's name can mean 'he dies, there is a dart, ' and 'sending forth' considering his death marks the beginning of the flood, it does indeed mark the beginning of a 'bringing forth' then it could be translated as 'his death shall bring'. Also, considering the obscure origins of these names no one can say with 100% certainty the definitions, even your cited 'expert.'

You're wrong on this IP. Eve literally says I will call him Seth because God has appointed me another son. We're supposed to know the connection to "appointed", not because it is the meaning of the word but through the meaning of the root of the word. I see another commenter has done all the hard work setting this out, so I won't repeat the details.

I have a feeling that the names do mean something, and that it should point to Jesus. But just like their ages, the meaning of their names is probably lost to us now.

"Christians, we need to follow what scholars say."

I wish you’d have more transparency with this kind of thing, because you should’ve pointed out how one of your own videos pushes this narrative (in your Genesis series).

I see videos occasionally that have similar tones about ancient or original Chinese pictographs having something to do with genesis that I think a lot of us would love to hear your thoughts on.

You are going against Chuck Misslers teachings on this (which is where it comes from). He's done a lot of study on these and more.

Hess is one Scholar. Missler is an expositor of high caliber. Might want to review this in more depth, than just denouncing it because it's poorly presented on TikTok.

They are not getting the meaning from the name in those instances but the root words like Methuselah or Methushelach; Math: Male, man from Mathay: When? Shelach: missile, weapon, sprout from Shalach: To send, appoint. But the Methu might be from the same root as moth (to die, death) so methu shalach death will send or appoint aka death will bring. There is a thought that the mek in lamek might be muk meaning to be low or depressed aka despair. Enosh: Man, mankind from Anash properly to be mortal. Anash: To be weak, sick aka mortal. Kenan or Qenan from the same as qayin: spear which is from the same as qinah: lamentation aka sorrow. Mahalalel: praise of God. Mahalal: praise from Halal: to be boastful, to praise aka Blessed. El: God, in pl. gods. Enoch from Chanok from Chanak: to train up, dedicate aka teaching. Seth from Shith: To put, set aka appointed.

In case anyone’s interested in praying for our Christian channels like Inspiring Philosophy:

16 prayer points you can pray for them:

1
You can pray that they will always have a good walk with God (that they will not forget their first love), that God will bless their daily private Bible reading and prayer life, and that they will have good sound doctrine.

2
You can pray that they will be full of the Holy Spirit and that God will bless their ministries so that many more people will come to faith in Jesus for God’s glory, and that they will feed God’s sheep and disciple them properly.

3
You can pray that they will be humble, that they will remember how many Christian leaders in the past have fallen, and that they will have a very healthy fear of the Lord.

4
You can pray that God will protect them and the ministry God has given them from:
Pride
Love of fame
Love of money
Desire for the approval of people rather than the approval of God
Being worried about offending people
Compromising God’s Word
Sexual temptation
Demonic attacks
Persecution (from outside the Church and inside the Church)

5
You can pray for their PHYSICAL HEALTH and that God will heal all their health problems.

6
You can pray for their MENTAL HEALTH. Pastors and Christian workers often have stress and battle discouragement and depression. Please God touch them and heal them of all mental and emotional problems and distress.
They can also sometimes be hurt by the people they serve or by other Christian leaders - so we can pray that this won’t happen but that if it does that God will heal these wounds and strengthen His servants to forgive each other and that God will restore unity for His Glory.

7
You can pray that God will bless and protect their families.
Satan often attacks Christian workers by attacking their loved ones.
So you can pray that their family members will all have a good walk with God, have good sound doctrine, that God will protect them all from demonic attacks, that God will also bless and protect their physical and mental health, heal them of all infirmities, and that God will bless all their family relationships so that there is peace and love in their families.
You can pray that God especially blesses and protects all areas and parts of their marriages, so that they will not be tempted to look elsewhere.
Also please God bless their marriages especially so that they can be a model and example for other Christians.

8
You can pray that God will abundantly bless and protect the finances of the ministries and also the personal finances of God’s servants (especially finances needed for health or medical expenses).
You can pray that they always have abundant finances so that they can always do every good work God wants them to do.

9
You can pray that God blesses and protects the relationships between Christian co-workers in ministries - so that no jealousy or strife or bitterness takes root. That they will all have Christian unity and that their focus will be on God getting all the glory and rejoice in any and all work for God.

10
You can pray that God prevents any technical or logistical or legal or any type of problems for their ministry, but if they have any such issues/problems that God will help them resolve/fix and totally solve and remove these problems.

11
If it’s an internet (e.g. YouTube) ministry you can pray that God will help the videos spread on those platforms and get many views and that God will use the videos to bring many people to repentance and faith in Jesus.

12
You can pray that God will help Christian leaders be good shepherds of Jesus’ sheep and continue to feed Jesus’ sheep, and that they will not only convert people, but also disciple new converts so that they can grow and develop and mature in a healthy and supported way.

13
You can pray that God will give them the heart of a servant.

14
You can pray that God gives them wisdom and helps them and powerfully guides them when making all decisions and plans.

15
You can pray that if they make mistakes or sin that God will grant them humility and repentance and restore them.

16
You can pray that more Christians will pray consistently for Christian

You could make a list of pastors/ministries you want to support and pray for them regularly.

Jesus said:

“ when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will REWARD you.”

Yup seth means appointed or placed in every translation I checked...
Enosh means man as frail and mortal so yes mortal can be derived from that statement.

Oh boy! I "learned" these meanings for names from my first online Bible teacher, Chuck Missler, a man I respect greatly. He always said "Do your homework". Now IP, a man whose teachings are Gold to me & there is a disagreement on the subject. I thank IP for the "heavy lifting"in other videos, but guess it's time to do my own heavy lifting & sort this one out for myself! I do like Swiss Apologetics comment below. Thank you IP for your take on Genesis 5 & desiring clarity in Scripture.

But Seth does mean appointed/designated and Enosh mortal/fragile!

Your source doesn't give all legitimate readings of these names; as a Hebrew speaker, I think there is a room for the case that guy is trying to make. His argument is still weak, to my taste, and probably even slightly pathetic, but here we have enough coincidences not to mock it, at least.
