📚 How to negate a statement (Introduction to logic)

Q1. Give the negation of each statement.

(a) Wal-Mart is not the largest corporation in the USA.

(b) It is not raining today.

-- If a statement already has the word not, we can
remove it to form the negation: “It is raining today.”

(c) California is the most populous state in the country.

-- Solution: Form the negation using the word not: “California is
not the most populous state in the country.”

(d) It is sunny or hot.

-- The negation "It is sunny or hot" is "It is not sunny and it is not hot" or equivalently "It is neither sunny nor hot".

(e) It is sunny and hot.

-- The negation of "It is sunny and hot" can be stated "It is not sunny or it is not hot".

Q2. Write the negation of the following inequality:

4x+2y LESS THAN 5

-- The negation of “ 4x + 2y is less than 5” is “4 x + 2y is not less than 5”.
