At the end of his questline, if you save him, you are able to fight Gwyn together with him.
Now if you look at it exactly, this guy single handedly beat Gwyn, was about to link the flame (therefore becoming the, ,sun“ of his word, and finally ending his journey, dying peacefully)
But he remember you, his companion, refused to link the flame, gone outside, placed his sign, and waited for you to come.
So you both can become the sun in your worlds.

In DS3 I made a build called "Sunset Solaire". Only because how much I wanted him to be alive. The story behind it was when Solaire linked the fire in his world. He was resurrected in DS3 to link the fire again but he I made him the Lord of Hollows because I think he would of lost faith in the gods.

This is what makes souls games beautiful you find something you love but you will lose them like solair you can save them from a parasite yet he will never find his sun. So it makes you think are we the player the bad guy

I fell in love with Dark Souls when I decided to kill Solaire in a second or third playthrough to get his equipment, thinking it would make me invincible or something but instead I got to read this : "... Solaire's incredible prowess must have come from rigorous training alone, for his equipment exhibits no special traits." This made me realize that I killed the most honest, empathic character in the game for nothing and I felt real bad about it. I also realized there's no point trying to find and "edge" in Souls games. It's better to spend time learning its mechanics and getting better at them. And finally, it made me realize the guy who made this game is a real genius.
