King Leopold II and the Congo
Leopold II reigned as King of Belgium from 1865 to 1909. However, his main notoriety comes from Belgium's colonial rule over the Congo. Leopold declared the Congo his personal property and established a rule in the territory that led to horrendous human rights violations.
Congo Free State (1885-1908)
Leopold ruled the Congo as his private property and established a ruthless regime to exploit its natural resources (especially rubber and ivory). The indigenous population was subjected to forced labour, and those who failed to meet quotas were brutally punished. Millions of people were killed, maimed or forcibly displaced during this period.
Human Rights Violations
Violations committed during Leopold's rule in the Congo include
Forced labour and slavery.
Amputation of the hands and feet of workers who did not meet quotas.
Large-scale massacres and intimidation of the population.
Child labour and the break-up of families.
International Response and Consequences
Leopold's atrocities in the Congo were condemned by the international community. In particular, figures such as the journalist and writer Edmund Dene Morel and Joseph Conrad informed the world about the situation in the Congo. Conrad's novel ‘Heart of Darkness’ is considered an important work that symbolises this period.
In 1908, as a result of international pressure, Leopold was forced to hand over the Congo to the Belgian state. However, even this did not bring lasting relief for the Congolese people.
