Wow, can't believe how much its changed. My wife and I stumbled across Hiriketiya 10 years ago and I've been back a few times with my son on surfing trips. I don't want to deny locals the chance to cash in on foreign tourists money but personally its sad to see the development, often surfed the left hand point break with only 3 or 4 others in the water, great memories. Haven't been back to Lanka since covid, is this development happening all along the coast. Luv to the locals from Australia.

Yes another ruined place or on it's way to getting ruined. As you have very correctly said, Hiriketiya was a hidden gem until its been exposed to the profit makers. The same sad thing happened some years ago to the once beautiful Polhena beach in Matara. Today Polhena is just a commercial wasteland with crowds coming from many parts of the country to bath here. The sad thing thing is, the majority of those patronizing this place do not come to appreciate the beauty and take in whats in offer from the ocean, instead its just a place to drink their liquor, indulge in drugs and engage in other activities that's purely detrimental to this area. Pollution is a direct consequence as a result of these huge crowds. And no more is it pristine as it was some years ago. The unregulated development of the area in the form of the construction of various cheap guest houses hasn't helped at all. And has made this beautiful place almost a squalor. I won't be in the least surprised if Hiriketiya is facing the same fate as Polhena. Thank you for highlighting the 'otherside' of the story when it comes to discovering paradise. We really need to manage what Sri Lanka has to offer in form of its natural beauty. At the moment sadly nothing is been done about it.
