MG4 EV Real World 70mph motorway long journey range test - 160 mile round trip New Forest - Heathrow

This slightly longer video demonstrates the real world efficiency and range of the MG4 Trophy EV on a long trip at maximum legal speeds on the motorway. Conducted at between 9 and 10 °C, with about 50 miles of drizzle on the journey, and a few sections of slower A roads and motorway speed restrictions, still around 120 miles of this journey was at 70mph.

I have included mutliple points on the trip to prove that I actually did this all in one go, and interestingly, the slow sections demonstrate how much of an improvement in efficiency there is to be had by slowing down a bit.

On a 250 to 300 mile journey, there comes a point when driving slower, say at 60mph and not having to stop for a charge would actually result in a shorter journey time than driving faster and having to stop. The lower speed sections were showing between 3.7 and 3.9 miles per kilowatt hour, the faster sections were 3.5 to 3.6, so the difference was around one third of a mile per KW/h, one third of 62 is 20.6, so driving at the lower speeds would have resulted in over 20 miles more range.

Good real conditions video. I recently completed a 300 mile journey to Cornwall and back, keeping my average motorway speed at 60mph as opposed to 70mph. At that speed the consumption figure I achieved was 4.0 m/kW, so interesting to see how much difference the extra 10mph makes.

What a awesome video. Thank you. I needed someone to tell me what the motorway range would be like and you can imagine my surprise when I'm from the new forest and would be making my journey to a little further than Heathrow 😊.. You've covered all the points my friend thank you so much. I normally drive around 75mph on motorways 😅

I calculated my journey and it's 86 miles one way.

Thanks for your videos, really good job! I live in Liverpool and I have a MG4 in Trophy trim, I noticed that when temperature is below 7 Celsius I struggle to achieve more than 3.2 miles/kWh on average, but in the few days when temperature has been more on the 8-9 mark, I easily got between 3.5 and 4.2 mls/kWh. I think watching your video we got about the same figures, so that's reassuring since it's my first EV :)

Very interesting Burl.
Many thanks for the commentary and detail👍

Very useful real-world experience - a good variety of British roads, traffic and weather, plus you’re in our neighbourhood of south Hampshire and not Spain or somewhere, all made this very credible 👍 The MG4 is top of the list if it passes the dog-in-boot test - hope to try her out at the dealer soon…

HI Burl, nice video.

I've had my Trophy MG4 for about 3 weeks now and 100% love it. I do 64 miles round trips to and from work (so 7AM start, 5:30PM getting home) along the M56/M53. To be honest not seen 3.5+ yet (But I'm not too fussed as it's all well within limits - have yet to charge it back to 100% for eg).
I've been on a 110-ish mile round trip to Manchester and dign't even consider charging to 100%

What is funny though is watching my wife (who drives it far less than me) reaching to (A) inset the ignition key (B) the handbrake (C) the gear leaver 🙂 (And then cursing me and the car!)

One thing I did note was that you had your AC set to 21 - I can't seem to set it that low and still stay warm - I have to have it 27+ with the fans soundling like a helicopter!
Any thoughts?

Another really helpful video. I haven't been this far in my trophy yet, but I have a few trips coming up, including a 600 mile one around wales in April, so its nice to know what to expect! Thankyou.

Very Good thank you. Always helpful to see some real world driving range tests. Id like to see a video demonstrating the Lane Keep Assist and Pilot functionality on a motorway too. Perhaps another video?

Thanks so much for that Burl, very useful indeed and makes my mind up even more to get one

Thanks for the video. This also confirms that you will get around 160 miles out of the SR version on the motorway

Thanks Burt - I have had my MG4 for a week now and will be using it for my monthly 200 mile trip to the office on Monday. Your tips will help me make it with no charging break (or perhaps one quick one). Marvellous. I've subbed and looking forward to reviewing all your videos!

Thanks for the videos. I am trying to convince myself to pull the trigger on an MG4 Trophy and you are certainly helping!

Like another commenter, I’d really like to know more about the driving assist modes, as I’ve read some scare stories about them being more dangerous than useful (particularly Lane Keep Assist, which I saw described as “Lane Kill Assist”, as people commented on fighting with it to not steer them off the road (particularly on country lanes)!!

I’ve also seen people recommend using Traffic Jam Assist over Adaptive Cruise Control on Motorways as it was more reliable. Love to hear your detailed thoughts on these features!

Great video, I’m likely to do a 140 mile round trip once a week, mostly motorway, and have been concerned whether I can do this in a trophy long range in the absolute worst conditions/scenario.. it’s the one barrier to me getting the MG4.. this suggests it should be ok (hopefully) even in colder weather..🤞🏻🤞🏻

I had a Leaf before and noticed that once you start going much over 60 mph efficiency suffered a bit. So I'm not surprised by your findings. A range of 200+ miles on longer higher speed journeys is perfectly acceptable. I generally like to take a break after 2 hours of driving anyway. I have the MG4 Trophy.

Speed value on the small screen is frequently covered. Converting energy consumption values to kWh/100 km:
K = 1 / M / 1, 609 x 100
would be helpful for non-english viewers.
I am from southern Bavaria, I have my SE Long Range since end of November and my average winter consumption is 18 kWh/100 km
M = 100 / K / 1, 609
is 3, 5 miles/kWh. Half is motorway (70-80 mph). Half the time were minor minus degrees.

Hi. 1:46 in with the Auto Lane Change...can you clarify what settings you had if you remember? Sounds like you had full LKA (with Emergency Lane Keeping also??) Was it simply that you indicated left and then car steered into the free lane without prompting. Was the TJA function also selected? Thanks - Good vlogs

Hi Burl, thanks so much for the videos. Really good insight.

I have a question regarding the speed limiter: If enabled in the menu, does it turn on/off automatically when you disable/enable MG pilot?

Or do you have to enable speed limiter in the menu every time you disable cruise control? Say if you leave a motorway so no longer want to use cruise control, but still want to have the speed limiter running?

Thanks!
