How to Transition from Skinning to Skiing Like a Pro

Here’s a simple step-by-step process to make your transitions smooth and efficient. You’ll repeat these steps for both skis, working from your boots to your bindings, and finally to your skins.

Switch Your Boots to Ski Mode:
Adjust your boots from walk mode to ski mode and tighten the buckles.

Set Your Bindings to Ski Mode:
Push the toe piece down to switch from skin mode to ski mode, then flip up the heel piece. Step into the binding.

Remove Your Skins:
Use your poles for balance as you rip off the skins. On steeper slopes, it can help to bring your uphill leg over your downhill leg to make it easier to reach the tail clip.

Repeat on the Other Ski:
Follow the same steps for your other ski.

Pro Tip:
Create a routine and stick to it every time. This helps you avoid common mistakes, like dropping in with your boots still in walk mode or forgetting to remove one of your skins.

Gear Suggestions:
This process works best with certain brands of skins (I am almost only using pomoca now), simple bindings and boots, like the ATK bindings and the Scarpa F1 LT boots. Make sure your poles have powder baskets, and keep your skis waxed for better performance.

Can you remove your skins without taking your skis off? Yes, you can! With a little practice, it’s totally doable and can save you time on the mountain. #techtip #backcountryskiing #skimo #bigmtndreams

The ONLY reason I am learning to ski. Splitboarding is such a pain in the ass.
