Drywall/Hardiebacker for Maax Utile Shower Install (Flange Dilemma)

This is a look at how I am approaching the Maax Utile shower enclosure's flange. After installing the alcove shower enclosure walls, I was left with some exposed shower flanges that needed to be addressed.

On the sidewall that is only a few inches past the flange I did not use backer board. Instead I ripped a piece of 3/4" redwood trim and used a few stainless steel screws to hold it in place. Varnished the redwood and a small amount of silicone sealant to fill the gap. Only time will tell how long it lasts.

I do like you. Polymer mortar instead of mud. Wide nylon mesh reinforcement.
I skim the whole surface then apply exterior acrylic stucco. I like durock marble coat fine.
Lasts forever then.
