Welcome to the UK Quantum Computing and Simulation Hub

The Quantum Computing & Simulation Hub (QCS) is the largest of four hubs in the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme, which aims to give the UK a position as a world leader in the emerging quantum information market.

The QCS Hub began in late 2019 as a collaboration of 17 UK universities, supported by over 25 commercial and governmental organisations, with the University of Oxford as its lead partner. It builds on the achievements of its forerunner, the Networked Quantum Information Technologies Hub (NQIT), which ran between 2014 and 2019.

Quantum technologies have the potential to profoundly impact every aspect of our lives. To help fulfil this potential, the Hub is focusing on overcoming the key research challenges required to accelerate progress within quantum computing.

Through its extensive network of academic, industrial and governmental partners, the Hub places the UK at the forefront of the global competition to build a universal quantum computer demonstrator. Such a machine will have the potential to provide answers to a vast array of questions that are impossible for classical computers to handle. Quantum computing will, for example, enable the accelerated development of new drugs and materials, change the landscape of cyber security and exponentially accelerate machine learning.

Members of the Hub come from a diverse range of disciplines, reflecting the many different skills required to transform quantum computing. Areas of investigation cover both hardware and software, ranging from core technologies to potential applications for both near-term and long-term approaches to quantum computing.

Working with a wide range of commercial, academic and governmental organisations allows the Hub and its partners to play a key role in the increasingly diverse quantum ecosystem within the UK. Proactively cultivating an environment in which researchers can engage with the world of commerce and entrepreneurship allows the Hub to promote the real-world potential of quantum computing and the important part its early adoption can play in the UK economy.
