I think this was a beautiful touch to the scene. The fact Tony was so caught up with facing the reality that he's speaking to his father as a friend, as a comrade or even as a amicable employee. Tony holding the flowers was simply him listening to his dad, doing as he's told and not even thinking about his peeve. Just a kid talking to his dad, a dad that passed long ago, a kid who's become a dad of his own. Lots of healing in that scene for Tony.
