I live in Florida, USA and have a co-worker with a cockney accent. She told me that a lot of people here somehow mistake it for an Australian accent. I have to admit hearing a cockney accent in person is an odd experience for me. It's a pretty 'extreme' accent to my American ears and you only hear it in television and movies over here, making it seem almost fictional.

I'm born in central Canada but grew up watching a lot of British comedies so most UK accents, especially this one, come easily to me, and I can understand really thick Irish and Scottish accents for the most part also, even when they talk at regular speed :-) Thanks Faulty Towers, Monty Python, Black Adder, Young Ones and on and on

I am French but I learned English as a child and I always loved the cockney accent but to pass my teaching exams I had to get rid of the cockey and adopt what university calls the BBC accent! I've heard the 'theory' that the Australian accent is just Cockneys speaking while squinting in bright sunlight. It's certainly plausible, and not just linguistically. XD
