The car community, especially the supra community, are usually very helpful in builds and mods. It's awesome.

Gear changes without the shafts spinning are MEANINGLESS

There are 4 generations of r154 transmissions. That last two generations have double cone synchros on the first and second gears. They shift a lot better. The transmission you have there doesn't have it. A v160 will shift like dog shit if you don't have the right kind of oil in it. The v160 has triple cone synchros on first and second gears and double cone synchros on third and fourth gears. This is why they shift really good.

hi bro, i've a question thought u could perhaps help me out - so i have a 2JZ-gte twin turbo (non vvti ) auto engine from an aristo, as well as a 1jz-gte twin turbo (non vvti) r154 manual engine, i was wondering is it possible to interchange/swap the transmissions with each other? meaning the 1jz r154 manual gets bolted to the 2jz-gte, and the a340 auto 2j trans gets bolted to the 1jz?? anybody else can chime in? thanks alot

get a jzx110 shifter housing on the r154 and it makes it shift buttery smooth

You will like the Milwaukee Fuel 1/2" cordless impact. I got mine for about $175 new plus $60 for a new battery about a month ago and I still have not charged it with me using it for a good amount. The crank bolt on my motor came right off with no hesitation (at 195 ft.lbs) and after doing ball joints, brake calipers and removing lug nuts it was no problem at all either. Just use a impact adapter for 3/8" sockets and the 2763-20 is the latest model if you are looking to buy one.

The R154 stiffer due to the Marlin Crawler Bushings in there... Installed my Bushings over the weekend and boy they're a lot stiffer. Also put 75W-90 SAE (Valvoline) Gear Oil at about 3.5 Quartz, the manual Recommends 3Qtz though.

What brand of oil are you going with? (a lot of forums seem to recommend RedLine..)

Doing the same mod at the moment on my 94 TT putting in R154 tranny with the tripod shifter and I need a measurement between the transmission output shaft and the Auto TT differential for drift motion to make a custom shaft. Is it possible you have this measurement info. Any help would be deaply appreciated.

hey dude, keep up the good work!can you please state how much oil you end up putting into the r154, i have a JZA70 r154 and getting conflicting information online regarding it's oil capacity namely from 3 to over 4 quarts! thanks in advance!

Hi mate, just rebuilding my r154 out of my supra now, putting a billet thrust washer and selectors in it. It was so clunky threw the gears, if I used anything but redline gear oil it was terrible. I've got it apart now but it all seems very fresh. Shift forks and synchros have next to no noticeable wear. How did yours end up going in regards to shifting?

That is the weakest impact and 20v battery that Porter Cable sells. I have the PCC640B impact with a 5 AH battery and the only thing it struggles with is lug nuts.

@6:22 #4 They send you the parts but don't send all necessary parts... (Example: The Downpipe in a Turbo Kit, the Flange to weld onto exhaust from stock twin setup to said Downpipe) Sometimes something so simple, so cheap yet so important can put you back weeks in my case

Looking at doing a five speed on a slant 6 Chrysler engine. How do you identify the difference in the W series transmission terminology?
