Fantastic lesson. This style of cover is something I’ve been working on. That 52 reissue is a great choice for the song. I’m using an old parlor guitar to learn it which is great. I love arranging the melody into songs. I’ve done it for Mad World “Gary Jules version” and Polly by nirvana. I use finger picking which lends itself very well to melody runs with a bass line/rhythm playing.

I remember being no more than 5 years old listening to this song in the car with my dad all the time. Now I grew up and I understand..

Great work Eric, esp the chord with the open B

This song really hit the spot. I find it easy to get into its groove which is helpful for my shaky rhythm playing, and I've wanted to develop my ability to combine strumming with picking out notes. Your identification of the single notes goes by just a bit fast in the video, but it's good to try to feel some of that out myself as you say. Have always loved the song too, and it's really fun to play!

If you ever had a hankering to do so, I'd love to see a lesson for Waits's "Hold On." I know of one online lesson by a fine and famous teacher, but it's pretty stripped down to the basic rhythm, whereas the original has multi-instrumental flourishes that seem just the kind of thing that you know how to arrange nicely for guitar. Just thought I'd throw that out on the off chance you get excited about the idea!

Wow, probably my favorite Tom Waits tune! I knew how to play this song, but in a mostly boring fashion, so thanks for doing this punched up lesson! And Happy New Year!

Very good attention to detail in this tutorial, thanks. I've been working on incorporating the vocal melody into my chord playing. It really gets me "transported" into the song where I can strike a balance b/w achieving my own sound while copying the aspects I like from the studio or live recording, in this case I really enjoy the studio version. I feel like I Don't Wanna Grow Up has aged very well.

Any idea what equipment Tom might have used for the studio record? It sounds like an isolated overdriven but high quality acoustic guitar going through one of those god-awful Gorilla practice amps from the 70s and 80s that were all microphonic and muddy and ambient, and sound like a small-speaker a.m. radio. 🤣

Hi Eric, great video as usually, really a pleasure to listen and watch. I have a question not in driect relationship with this particular video but, i'm looking for a rubban mic, and of course the NTR you using seems to be very good ! do you try the Royer R121 too ? if you have experience with this one, your opinion highly interested me !
Thanks for your good work, and keep the vintage vibe ! Cheers from France.
