Any issue with pressing on the edges? What if you wire the 4 mechanical keys in parallel so that if any of them are depressed it activates? Very cool project, thanks for sharing!
The project I'm planning will not just use a mono 3.5mm cable, but connect to an arduino pro micro clone for usb keyboard functionality, so I can handle button debounce in code.
