I grab the basics to try, then dive in after a LOT of research. I guess you could call the research a hobby also because of the rabbit hole I go down. With crochet it's been about the fibers and their care, finding out which companies would be the biggest bang for their buck with projects I enjoy doing (bed sized blankets and plus-sized clothing are NOT cheap), stuff like that.
