Very interesting your comment about layers of privileges that protect you. I have never seen it that way.

I'm African, I've been living in Spain for 55 years, I've lived in the USA for four years, my ex-husband is American.
Everybody loves Madrid capital but my advice to you is (if you are thinking of live here for more than vacations) look at the periphery of Madrid.
There are smaller cities with a large population of afro-spaniards, and other communities: (on the nordeste of Madrid) LIKE Torrejón de Ardoz (the ex-American Air Force Base and now the PARQUE EUROPA city), Alcalá de Henares (the oldest university in Madrid) Coslada and more. (sud of Madrid) Móstoles, Getafe etc. 20 to 25 kilómetros from the capital: best prices in apartments and houses, shopping malls, supermarkets at walking distances, particularly good schools (all bilingual) and exceptionally effective communication with Madrid (train bus or metro).
My family and I have lived in TORREJON DE ARDOZ for 30 years, it is the best small city in Madrid in every way (in my opinion) and diverse also. But of course, do your own research.

Thanks this video! Which part of Madrid do you stay in? I'm also looking for neighbourhood to settle in, I have a 3 year old boy. Diversity is important!

Great couple. Welcome and I hope you find the best neighborhood with enough diversity but you are right, you will not find the same diversity as in Latina or Lavapies in other areas, but little by little that is changing since every year more and more expats from all over are comming to live here. I wish you the best of luck since you are very nice, humble and respectful with our culture.

I left Portugal and spent time in Madrid. I like Madrid, despite the negative comments I heard from Americans about racism. Many African Americans vowed that they would never return. My experience was totally different. I love the food, upscale clothing, and unique, nice furniture. Currently, I'm in Toulouse, France, and love it due to the diversity, but as usual, the Africans/Arabs from Morocco and Algeria are thought of negatively. I see a lot of homelessness, and drinking with these groups. I have also noticed that everyone can tell I'm not your usual black person. Many people start conversations to ask me where I'm from. It also does not help that I'm African-American with two dogs, a Maltipoo and a Bichon Frise. How many Africans do you see with two well-groomed dogs? It must be hard for the Africans to see other black people who do not receive the hate!

It is funny when you want to live in a good neighborhood but then you complain about the less diversity in those ones and is "very" important. So you dont want to live in a good neighborhood because there are more spaniards/whites living there. Who is the xenophobic or racist if your first point is avoid non your race neighborhoods? What a contradiction you have guys... Middle class in Spain unfortunatelly is integrated by Spaniards or European white people so if you want more diversity in there you may move to. People are not racist with the skin, people are racist with money, dont forget it
