There is an accelerating crisis in families being forced to use food banks, according to a leading charity. New figures reveal almost 200,000 parcels were given out across Scotland in the past year.

The Trussell Trust - which refers needy families for support - is urging the UK and Scottish governments to do more to help.

This afternoon the Prime Minister defended his efforts to tackle the cost of living crisis as he was accused of having his 'head in the sand'. The First Minister says her government's response has been significant, but not perfect. Our Westminster Correspondent Kathryn Samson reports.

People are just jumping on the food bank bandwagon. Lay fruit, veg and other groceries out for anybody to help themselves, and no matter what their financial status, people will take it whether they need it or not.
It’s good that food destined for the supermarket skip is being distributed to those that may need it. And I use the word ‘may’ as many people stocking up from food banks do not need to. A lot of them seem to be able to afford cigarettes at £12 a packet though.
