Three years ago, in the episode about Poland, a user named Karri Koivusalo left this sharp comment:
"I find it terribly ironic that Polonium, named after Poland, Marie Curie's home country, is the first element in the periodic table that has no stable isotopes."

Damn... Marie Curie during WW1 would make a great movie.

As the documentary "Blackadder Goes Forth" showed, the Red Baron was shot and killed by Lord Flashheart behind the lines, in a "duel". Lord Flashheart, never one to boast about himself, allowed Captain Brown credit for the kill, since Lord Flashheart owed Brown 50 quid.

Woof!

The Red Baron’s boots, joystick, and compass are at the Australian War Memorial. It’s so weird to look at them and think that, over 100 years ago, one of the world’s greatest fighter pilots used the same objects you’re looking at... and that he died with his feet in those boots and his hands grasping that joystick.

Rest in peace, Baron Rittmeister Manfred von Richthofen.

Fun fact my great grandfather was with the unit involved in shooting down of the Red Baron. Love your work so much I know you did episodes on artillery in the past but can you focus on some Australian artillery units at all? My great grandfathers last rank in WW1 was driver for the 9th FAB he survived the war and fought in WW2, he lives on with me everyday he is my courage and strength.

We have had this discussion following several different TGW episodes. The answer is always the same:

A few verses from that well known novelty song from 1966, Snoopy vs. the Red Baron, explain what happened that fateful day:

[Verse 2]
In the nick of time, a hero arose
A funny-looking dog with a big black nose
He flew into the sky to seek revenge
But the Baron shot him down (Curses, foiled again!)

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
Now, Snoopy had sworn that he'd get that man
So he asked the Great Pumpkin for a new battle plan
He challenged the German to a real dogfight
While the Baron was laughing, he got him in his sight

[Musical interlude]

That Bloody Red Baron was in a fix
He'd tried everything, but he'd run out of tricks
Snoopy fired once, and he fired twice
And that Bloody Red Baron went spinning out of sight

That, my friends was how the Baron met his fate. History has it wrong. There is animated video proof of a flying dog house shooting down the Baron.

Oh, wait! You say the animated video came after the song? How do we tell all those who learned their history via Rock and Roll that what they learned w as all wrong? What other historical songs have we been mislead to believe are factual accounts?

The title made me think for a second the Red Baron was killed by Marie Curie which raises some serious questions.

It's not strictly true that Curie is the only person to win Nobel prizes in two fields.
Linus Pauling won the prize for Chemistry in 1954 and Peace in 1962. Curie was of course the first to make this achievement.

Some of the red barons personal effects and parts of the plane are in the Australian War Museum in Canberra. Definitely worth a look.

Funny you should mention "who shot the Red Baron" In Australia, a week or two ago we had a news segment about a descendant of an "supposed" eye witness to the Baron's fatal shooting. The man in question was a riflemen dug in next to a MG nest. They'd have seen the Red Baron fly over the line for the whole day. Supposedly the Baron had slipped behind an allied plane and had just dipped ever slightly down, giving the MG crew a perfect shot at him. They fired and his triplane suddenly swerved and crashed into a near by small forest. The eye witness had rushed to free the Red baron from the wreckage that's the story.

Q: How did the Kaiser react to the deposition of his cousin Nicholas? Did he give a statement? Offer him asylum? Keep up the great work everyone!

I don't know if anyone else watches it, but that TV show "Timeless" recently did an episode set during WW1 where they ran into Marie Curie.

Unsolved History had an episode on the Red Barron. I highly recommend it. They actually tried, as best as was possible, to match the actually conditions of the shoot down. Their conclusion was that Snowy Evens was the killer. Their experiment was very convincing, particularly as they were able, astonishingly, to match almost perfectly the actual angle of the shot from the ground on a moving plane. I'm sure you realize how difficult that is.

Excellent show indeed, most interesting and informative, in regards to these two most interesting individuals of modern European history!
