A ritual preserved by Zoroastrians until 100 years ago, burying one's loved ones in a tower of silence or Dakhma was practiced for thousands of years in the Iranian plateau. The crypt or Dakhma was a place where the body was placed to become prey for scavengers. The word Dakhma refers to the place of cremation. In ancient Iran, it was a common custom to either bury the dead or burn them.
