I’m a contractor and I myself have taken HVAC classes and have my universal card . I do everything in building a home and I tell people all the time that they can do these projects themselves if they want to save money and have the proper tools . I’ll even teach them the first time through while doing the job or at least they will have the knowledge of how things are done but do the research and have a idea of what’s expected . Like watching your channel.

I appreciate all your DIY HVAC videos. I was turned off to the whole HVAC field a few years ago when i tried to purchase some parts from a local supplier. I didn't work for a company so they refused to sell me anything. It looks like access to equipment and tools is becoming easier to obtain which is good.

I would like to add two sites to your list.

I have had fantastic experiences dealing with repairclinic. I use them for all my appliance parts needs from washers/dryers, refrigerators, ovens, microwave, even HVAC parts. Two winters ago my furnace was not working. More specifically the blower. I narrowed it down to either the capacitor (basically a $10 part) or the blower motor itself. At the time I did not have a meter or the knowledge to test either component. Figured I was money ahead ordering both as compared to calling out a contractor. I pulled the blower motor/wheel and cleaned it. Parts came in and I could have tried the cheaper capacitor first but I already had the fan out. Replaced both components and got it going. Come to find out only the capacitor was bad. Now I keep spare caps on hand and I have a (good) used blower motor. If I recall my particular blower motor was around $150-200ish. Last year my furnace went out again. Was not starting. By this time I had a meter but no idea really how to use it or how to properly troubleshoot either component. I narrowed my issue down to either a bad inducer motor or a bad board. I ended up calling it quits and called out my new local HVAC guy. He showed me my mistake using the meter to diagnose the board as bad. He then offered for me to buy the part and install it or have him do it. I went ahead and allowed him as he was already there. Over the last year I have gained a real interest in HVAC.

One other site I would like to mention because they are local to me and offer shipping is Shortys HVAC supplies

Thank you very much for educating me. I was able to buy my own HVAC equipment and hire my own contractor to install it. I saved a little over $5000 on going through that process instead of buying it through the contractor. Thank you for the great education and I think more people need to look into this. Thanks again for saving me all that money!

I agree with other comments, thank you for putting out this info. I DIY my HVAC 25 years ago. It wasn't rocket science then and isn't now.

Install it yourself. the warranties only cover parts anyway and you can install it, you can service/fix it. Parts are cheap compared to a 3k installation labor bill. you can buy a new system with that cash. I like being self insured.

5 years ago I replaced my 3.5 ton 10 seer heat pump myself after being fed up with the repair guy giving my half the story every year he came out to do the annual checkup. Spent many hours on YouTube and learned a lot from that alone as well as what tools are used and how to use them. Since I have an EE degree, the electrical part was not an issue. My co-worker was in the process of completing a 9-month HVAC certificate course at a trade school and loaned my his text book. Then, I got my EPA part 4 certificate to allow me to purchase and use refrigerant. Then, got up enough nerve to purchase a 3.5 ton heat pump system from Alpine. I also purchased some HVAC tools to aid in my installation, including an oxygen acetylene kit. Practiced brazing then installed the system. Took me 2.5 days start to finish and I'm happy with the performance. Sizing the system is important as well as ensuring the proper return duct size so that the system performs as designed. Your channel wasn't available at the time but I'm grateful that you are putting out this info for DIY'ers. All told, about $4K and I still have the HVAC tools.

I’m curious how often warranties are actually used. Seems like warranties on most things are actually worthless when you go to use them.

Thank you for your many very informative videos. I had a couple general questions. Can you replace just he outside heat pump units or must you also replace the air handlers? 2. If only replacing outside unit, can you mix brands? I assume they would need to be be of same capacity and physical size. What about SEER2 ratings?
Thanks !

Great vid sir! Like the first website you showed and the option diyers have in their project to land the 10 yr warranty. Some good things think about. Looking forward to the sizing vid. I have researched this a little but was just for fun. Never purchased and installed so this should help boost my confidence.

I'll be changing out both of my units, I've ripped them apart keeping them going enough that I might as well do the whole thing from start to finish. Also crazy that looking at prices of units you see a difference from maybe $500-1000 between two diff models/makes and HVAC installers charge like $2-3k more for that more expensive unit.
