On December 11, 1994, Gen. Stanislaw Maczek, hero of World War II and gifted commander of the 1st Polish Armored Division, famous for its battles at Falaise during the invasion of Allied forces in Normandy in 1944 and the liberation of Dutch Breda, died. “Fight hard, but in a chivalrous manner”. - he appealed to his soldiers.

“A Polish soldier can fight for the freedom of all nations - he dies only for Poland,” used to say Gen. Maczek, commander of the 1st Armored Division during the battles to liberate Western Europe from German occupation in 1944.

During World War I, he fought on the Russian front in the Carpathian Mountains and the Italian front in the Alps. “He becomes acquainted with the mundane nature of combat, which was sometimes a shock to a young intellectual (...) with the deaths of his subordinate soldiers and the sacrifice of his colleagues to save others. These years of war shaped and hardened him as a full-blooded soldier.” - Tadeusz A. Wysocki wrote about the influence of World War I experiences on Gen. Maczek's later life in the publication “General Stanislaw Maczek.”

- Liberation of Breda - The capture of Breda was an excellent drug for the pain of the fall of Warsaw. The Dutch, knowing well the tragedy of the Poles, tried to more than pay them for all the hardships and suffering. The whole of Breda became one big cordial house. Banners saying “Welcome Poles” hung from the windows,” the correspondent recalled.
