There is a textbook example of a test being 99% accurate, but because the population is only positive in a small number of cases, the rate that the test being true and the individual being positive is also true is close to random. I remember that from my stat course.

80% success rate means 20% failure rate. This is kind of bad when you miss lies, but it's horribly flawed when you mistake truthful people with liars!

Ha! I know the principals
and founders of a major lien detection company—one is very bright, the other a moron; and while it’s been a while I could not make sense of their last results. The correct statistic is d’ corrected for base rate.
