There is great hardship in our world. Especially in the run-up to Christmas, many people ask themselves: How much should I donate? Moral philosopher Susan Wolf surprisingly says: It's not about all of us becoming moral saints. That would even be a great loss for the world. What makes her say that?

Asking about the meaning of life is one of philosophy's perennial endeavors. As long as belief in God dominated, it did, however, not have today’s urgency, when meaning is generally no longer associated with a higher power. If God is dead we need to find meaning in life itself. The renowned US-American philosopher Susan Wolf, who is giving the Einstein Lectures at the University of Bern this year, has been pondering this for many years.
She defines a meaningful life as one in which you passionately devote yourself to projects that also are objectively worth doing. These need not be moral undertakings. A foodie, a musician or an amateur gardener also show passion for a cause of objective value. As Susan Wolf sees it, people are not here to make the world a better place, but to make something of their own lives. But can you primarily strive for your own sense of purpose when others are doing badly? Barbara Bleisch wants to know more.
