Will Donald Trump force Canada to join the EU? | LBC Analysis

Mark Carney has vowed that Canada will never be part of the US after he was sworn in as the country's Prime Minister on Friday.

Mr Carney, who was governor of the Bank of England from 2013-2020, said that Donald Trump's talk of Canada becoming the US' 51st state was "crazy".

His swearing-in comes at a turbulent time for Canada, after Mr Trump threatened historic financial devastation for the country amid an escalating and erratic trade war, alongside repeated vows to make the country America's 51st state.

As tensions between the two neighbours remain high, former EU Trade Commissioner, Pascal Lamy, gives Andrew Marr his predictions.

The one thing that Trump has done positively for Canada is bring Canada into the news. I’m in the EU and it has made many of us consider Canada for a holiday. There’s a feeling of camaraderie towards you.

I'm Canadian, and I tell you sincerely that I would vote for Canada to join the EU if we were allowed to become a candidate country.

As a European I would welcome Canada as a new trustworthy member of the EU.

Canadian here, my wife is from the UK. We have family and friends in the EU. We visit EU countries regularly. I would love to see Canada part of the EU. USA has become a toxic isolated country.

Canada would not be forced. It would be a great alliance.

As a Canadian, I'd welcome it. We have more in common with the EU in outlook than the US.

As a Dane and EU citizen, I would wholeheartedly welcome Canada into our union.

Remember, we are no longer at war with each other and you now share a border with the EU. So joining would seem natural.

If Canada joined the EU, as a retiree, I would definitely spend 6 month a year in Europe!

There's nothing to force. We Canadians would welcome an alliance with Europe - especially since America can't be trusted anymore.

I am Canadian, and most Canadians I know would be happy to join the EU. We've always felt we have much more in common with the EU than the USA.

As a Canadian, I am in for joining the EU

I'd rather join the EU anyday compared to being the 51st state. This unwarranted harassment from a former friend (not comrade trump though) is painful 😢

Many Canadians want to join the EU, it is our natural home.

The EU is sane, while the American leadership is not. Aligning with one over the other seems a no brainer. We can't go it alone.

Let’s be clear here as a European 🇪🇺 and Swedish 🇸🇪 citizen we are for our allies Canada against any attack whether financial or otherwise and def feel that closer economic ties are in both parties interest. Personally wouldn’t mind an EU or economic area deal with Canada.

As a Canadian I certainly hope so. Would love to get out from the USA dependence ASAP.
