Dirty Dubstep Day 1 pt 2: Making a Powerful Dubstep Beat

This Reason 5 Tutorial is geared towards people exploring the dirtier and more powerful style of Dubstep, along the lines of Nero, Excision and Skrillex.

If you use fruity loops or garage band or logic, protools, ableton or any other DAW I'm sure you'll find something in here you can learn from, since I try to explain *why* I do things rather than just *what* I do! :)

@itchydez As the first person to notice this, you get an imaginary gold star that makes people magically thumbs-up your comment.

Loved the trick with the overcompressed version. Thanks! This can be used in other styles rather than just dubstep. It could be used for pads to make them drown your speakers in sound. Also, I don't know if he mentions it in this tutorial or others but even samples such as hi-hats can have bass low content which will screw up and take energy and volume from the actual bass, so you'll want to hi-pass everything that's not supposed to have low end. So many ideas now... *clicks Reason icon*

Just learned about parallel compression. Why did I not know about this until now! Really useful for drums. Thank you so much.

... and making sure the limiter is NOT on. This might seem weird, but what Soft Clip does is add a nice, delicate distortion, as opposed to the

that hard clipping would give you.

"Anymore than this and you start to drown your snare in reverb, and snares can't swim so that's a really cruel and unusual thing to do"

WOah soft clipping...loving it. Never heard such a clear sound with "selfmade" stuff

The filter output connects to the From Devices input of the Combinator. This only happens if the second 6:2 mixer is selected (blue outline). Also, holding down the Shift key should create a new instrument/effect without wiring it to anything. Also Reduce Cable Clutter (in the Options menu) will help you see only the cables are connected to the device that is currently selected. Hope this helps!

@laltor If you haven't figured it out, reason tries to make sound making as realistic as they can (hence the wires) Its like real sound boards. Say you actually have a physical combinator and compressor in front of you. You also have a bunch of wires. You are simply making the sound go through those wires, to where they are inputed, to go through that mixer, and come back to the master EQ. So Sound goes to combinator -wires- compressor -wires- master. Its like real life sound. Hope this helped!

@xMrTechx Check your audio-output in Edit - Preferences menu. Select your audio-device. If you don't know, try them all :S

Anyone having problems with wiring should re-watch the beginning of the video.

Looking forward to the bass patches if I'm honest. Most serious producers have got their hands on good samples and good eq/compression tutorials. The difference between' Joe smith' and Datsik or Bare Noize etc etc the synths!
