In addition to joint of the week, I've started another series called Essential Woodworking Skills. This is the third video. Check out the others here and let me know what topics you'd like to see covered in the future.

You are spot-on when you said the jointer was most overlooked - I think this is the first video I've seen that covers proper use, and also that it can inflict serious injury if not used correctly. Dad was a woodworker his entire life, and the jointer is what took three fingers when he slipped one day. Respect that tool, *always* use guards and push blocks. Focus on the operation at hand and don't think about *anything* else while performing that operation. Great video. Keep them coming.

Your videos are so helpful! I was about to sell my jointer I was so frustrated but it appears to have been a technique issue. Thank you for being so clear, concise, and helpful!

Jonathan, Thanks for all your postings, very helpful.
Like to give you something back. For 40 years, I was a retailer. During that time I obtained some insight into building a brand as you are doing. Consider - 1. Everything you do either builds or subtracts from your brand. 2. While most don’t realize it, once an expectation has been created by the best of the brands all other brands are compared to it. Example, McDonalds has set a consistency bar, all 1/4 pounders, coast to coast and beyond are the same. I suggest this is a standard of consistency, there are many more and for quality...

Your appearance, your shop’s appearance, your tools... video quality, your lessons, all add or subtract from your brand.

You are off to a great start! I’m not proposing any change. Hopefully this will bring up some new considerations and help as you continue to build your brand.
Thanks

Good vid Jonathan! One can’t be too safe with a jointer or a shaper! I’ve owned both for more than 30yrs and they still put me on edge before using them! Great series, thanks.

Awesome video. You're right, there isn't much out about actually using a jointer. Thank you very much for sharing this one!

Jonathan, thanks for the vid. I have just purchased a jointer and waiting for it to be delivered. The technique you described...never really thought about it. I would have just pushed the material across not thinking about where the pressure should be. I GUESS I would have figured it after milling some stuff and it not coming out worth a squat.

I have recently got a jointer but trying to joint aussie hardwoods is like trying to joint granite, many thanks for the tips i think they might help me out a bit as i am struggling to get flat boards even on relatively small boards. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I’ve just noticed this video, as it came up in my feed.

There’s many different videos regarding this topic, but this is a great video covering many aspects of use and safety. Having recently got the chance to use the UK version too (I live in the UK), I prefer the look of the UK version. The US version with the swing guard would scare the crap out of me! 😳

As always, thanks for the info, Jonathan. I hope all is well with the Baby and the new business venture. Have a good evening.

Hey Jonathan nice video on the jointer. Any chance of a video of your full milling process of rough lumber. I mean others have done them but your videos are so insightful and easy to watch.
Cheers
