Rule #1 from experience in hot shot been doing it for 5 years part time . The only rule actually to me PAY OFF YOUR DEBTS IN LIFE . Then pay off your truck and trailer ! Then work hotshot! I got house paid cars paid. I work hotshot 3 times a week when I feel like it

May have been said and I missed it, but it needs to be said. Unless you have some form of prior experience your first year is one massive learning curve. You really need a mentor. leasing on with a seasoned company or having close relationships with someone in the business is a must. As Jason stated the first 90 days it's very tough to book freight and to take it further a lot of brokers still say one year. About a month ago I was told no over not being two years in, I laughed at him and said cool have a nice day. Do not start your own authority unless you have the financial ability to cover any household or business debt for the first 6 months as your not going to earn well for the first year and you need to be learning not freaking out how your going to cover all the expenses. It can be a lonely life out here so make sure you're built for that as many aren't.

Man I was working in a warehouse 12hrs shift had a old f150 bought a used 24 ft trailer only did hotshots on my days off, I was able to quit my job and upgrade truck to a diesel.
You gotta start somewhere just stay motivated

one of the biggest things i learned the hard way and if i didnt have a safety net in my father would have ended my business is too much growth too fast and not paying enough attention to profit dollars. given the option between revenue dollars and profit dollars, you pick the third option, less expense dollars, too much growth creates expenses that you just cant pay if something goes wrong

Well... heres my deal... and not trying to brag....
Ive been an owner operator of a tree biz for 36 years. Im 53 now... never really have got to travel out of the state as ive been working my arse off. Ive saved around 1.3 million dollars. I have zero debt... and have already purchased an f600 with a sleeper cab and a 40ft 40k gross weight gooseneck. Im in the process of filing all the necessary paperwork ect. I have my cdl A and have tons of big truck driving experience. I doubt I will make any money in the first year but i figured since everything is paid for I have a slight advantage. I just want to learn the game and put some time in. I figured if im stuck somewhere looking for another load... i can do some site seeing ect. I dont have all the answers but i have a plan. My motto since I was 17... whatever you think about most will happen.... failure isnt a option in my brain. Hopefully i can make a few bucks and see the country doing it.

Nice video, can you have your own MC., and then sign on with a broker, , ? So that way your MC will be aging while your leasing..just asking

Just traded my truck for a 3500 ram, and bought a 35ft trailer everything is paid off 100% I use the combo to tow my toys with the intention to eventually start to hotshot within the next 3 years (when my kid graduates high school) I'm going the CDL route before I get started. As a new CDL/Hotshot driver is there many issues getting enough loads to at least cover insurance, and general overhead (fuel/food)? When I pull the trigger my house will be sold, and I'll be in owned property out in Michigan (just property taxes) so my bills will be very low. My plan is to hotshot during the summer, and chill in the winter how feasible is this? I regularly tow my enclosed 24' trailer 3k miles from az-Michigan and absolutely love driving

I was thinking of saving at least 6 months for overhead before even getting started to make sure everything is good, but hopefully I get enough loads as a new driver and "1 man owner operation" to at the very least break even with a small profit.

I’ve had my CDL for approximately three years, my boss said he’s willing to help me start my hot shot trucking business. Is the logistics major from the military, what are your thoughts?

Very interested in getting into the industry more and more I’m in a unique situation I have a decent passive income so I don’t have to make a ton of money right away. So my business will have time to grow

I have driven hotshot set ups off and on for the last few years . I recently was offered a company that has had their authority for 15 years with great ratings across the board . It also comes with a truck and trailer with a lot of life left in them . They are asking 120k . Would it make more sense to buy the company or go buy a truck, trailer, and get my own authority ? I really feel like it's a great opportunity, I just want to hear the opinion of someone who is more knowledgeable .

Great video. So I am totally uninformed in this business however my brother and nephew, both owner operators, are very well informed. I have the assets to help them get started. I have a Dodge Ram 3500 and also a 30 ft flatbed trailer that I inherited from my mother in law. The question I have is I want to focus in on a specific niches (the marketer in me) to distinguish ourselves from everyone. What are some suggestions you may have to make sure we start off with a bang?

How would you recommend someone who has a CDL for about 3yrs to get experience in hotshot. I do want to start up my own LLC, but i lack the experience in cargo tie down. I want to own my own truck and trailer, but I don't have the funds to buy out right. I would like to run local in Florida to have weekends off. I do know to get out of debt you need to run OTR.
