Here is a Complete Guide to Hotshot Trucking Business. See notes below and start hot shot trucking today.

Understand the expenses:
$100K in expenses for equipment
- $70K For truck
- $30K for trailer
$12K a year in Insurance
$2K for ancillary expenses
TOTAL: $114K
BREAKDOWN MONTHLY:
$20,000 down for equipment - 5YR - monthly: $1,500
$1K a month Insurance
$2,500 a month fixed expense.

How much can we make:
$1.50 - $2 a mile - 550 Miles (1 day trip) = $825 - (25 cents/m) $137.50
$687 - wear and tear = $650 per trip profit.
4-5 loads a week = $3,250 trip profit a week for 5 trips
$13,000 a month trip profit
$13,000 - $2,500 fixed expense = $10,500 net profit
$126,000 a year net profit — $198,000 gross

Think about all the ways it won’t work:
Death by expenses. Truck breaks down, in shop, etc.
Failure to get good loads. Call around for different brokerages
Cash Reserves - Make you have money set aside.

Before getting on the road you should knock on 20 shipping companies doors per week until you get at least have 2-3 direct shippers locally who is paying a good rate in a lane that will put you in a good market. Then find a direct shipper in the destination location so you can get back home. When you establish that, then use the load board as add on. Something very light.
Ex: Houston to Chicago $2.60 direct shipper plus a light load board freight at $1.20 will put you at $3.80 traveling 1, 100 miles for $4, 180 on that trip. Establish a direct shipper in Chicago coming back to Houston. Use the load board for add ons. That will put you around $8, 000 per week. Three times a month, that’s $24, 000 in revenue for the month. This only an example. Don’t stay on the load board.
I understand this may be all foreign to you, so I encourage you to screenshot this and always use it as a reference and do your research. 💪

Revenue is not profit. Profit is what is left after all expenses and payroll.

Not a video on how to start a hotshot business at all.

All the videos for 2024 say the rates are horrible now. I havent seen anything close to the amount you claim. Sounds like a best case scenario and even steady all the time.

So the problem with your business model is paying on that truck for 5 years. That loan is designed for people who drive 12k miles a year not 12k miles a month. Driving 550 miles a day, 5 days a week for 50 weeks over 5 years will put that truck at 700k miles. While pickups can go that far, more often then than not, it won’t. Most importantly if at anytime in that 5 years you try to get out of that truck, you will be so far underwater on it that you will be eating dinner on the titanic. The appropriate thing to do is pay on the truck according to the miles you put on it

And you need a CDL for anything over 26, 000 lbs. Good luck hauling loads if you can't go over 26k lbs.

That's 26, 000 lbs TOTAL. Truck, trailer, and load.

I will be retiring in the next couple of years. I will be in my mid 50's and looking for fun money. I have a suitable gooseneck trailer and a 3500 pickup. Is it reasonable to make a profit working 1 week per month?

If all your grossing is $200, 000 a year you're not going to be in business very long. Now if you're netting 200, 000 a year after fuel expenses and taxes then that's a good profit. But you're going to have to gross probably north of 300 if not $350, 000 a year to really make a profit and stay afloat. Fuel and truck payments and taxes are expensive

You didn't mention General Liability Insurance, which you need a $1, 000, 000 of coverage. How much does that cost?

Lol, you are not getting your money back out of the truck after doing 130, 000 miles a year for 5 years

No you don’t need a 70k truck and a 30k trailer 😂 get you a good used gooseneck for 10k and put new tires and bearings in it. And a good 7.3 with low miles for 15k. Quit telling people they need to buy brand new shit to start a business
