My 1028 Power Max is 19 years old. I live in Eastern Canada so lots of snow to deal with. I have never had an issue with the gearbox other than the seals starting to weep a couple of years ago. Local dealer told me to put grease in the gearbox and it would solve the issue but I chose to tear it down and replace the seals. There was no visible damage after approx 15 years of use. If the new ones are built like the old ones, I would trust them. My neighbor has a newer 1028 HD like you're showing, and he has had no issues either. I'm not knocking other brands, but I like and trust my Toro snowblower.. my $.02 JB. I also have never had an issue with my plastic chute and impeller housing. Thanks for this video!

I owned a toro powermax 826 from 2015-2020 with no issues with the gearbox. i like the chute control of the Toro. No issues with the clogging. I sold that and get the Arien Deluxe from 2021-2024. Bought the toro powermax 824 OE in Nov 2024 for $470 after tax and have to sell the Ariens since it is out of warranty. Ariens is a better machine but the Toro powermax is more then adequate for my residential used. The 3 yrs warranty was the deal maker for me plus the I was able to pocket some money after I sold thr Ariens Deluxe

Had an elderly neighbor several years ago that had a Toro 2 stage snowblower. He called to ask if I could change a shear pin one day. I went over there to do as he asked only to find out the auger shaft was sheared near the gearbox. It too had a threaded bolt for a "shear pin"! Couldn't line up the auger with the shift and that's how I discovered it. Fairly new machine! Had to send it back to the dealer for repair. I'd never buy a Toro 2 stage. Give me an Ariens any day. Great videos JB....👍

Have a Toro 724 from 1979. Has seen heavy use over the years. 200 ft x 18 ft driveway along with 600 ft of snow removal off the lawns for pet walking. This includes chopping up and blowing all sorts of tree branches. Stiĺl blowing snow to this day. Yes, it does not have shear pins. Have never had a broken bolt or damaged gear box. All my neighbors with Ariens or cubs seems every winter someone is replacing shear pins.

Thanks for pointing this out, J.B.! I’m gonna swap out the auger bolts on my new Toro with shear pins, since I already have a whole bag of them that I bought from Amazon years ago.

Could you just replace the bolts with shear pins?

I am sold on Toro. My father had a Toro 521 two stage that lasted 35 years. The auger was the older drum design, but it could sure move the snow. He replaced it with a MTD Gold two stage snow thrower. When I asked why he didn't opt for another Toro, he replied, "I won't be around for another 35 years, so I can't justify the expense of another Toro."
I have a Toro 3650 single stage with RTEK two cycle engine. I really like the two cycle engine. It is going on its 23rd winter this year.
These machines aren't cheap, but they are well designed, have excellent parts availability as well as a good dealer/service network, and will last for years if taken care of.

It looks like a solid machine but I cant really trust the gearbox. Maybe they should go with shear Pins.

Nothing Beats the older machines with Tecumseh engines and all solid housings, Impellers etc.

Over 12 years I broke shear pins once when I was at neighbours and hooked a dog chain in their driveway. I’d say the gearbox or something else would break without shear pins.

as a fellow Buffalonian living just south of the city, i have been using a powermax 1028 ohxe for six years with no issues. it chops through the ice at the end of the driveway with out breaking a sweat. only time it stalled out was in the nov 2022with the 80 inches from the storm because the chute wasn’t tall enough to clear the piles and buried the blower

If I were to buy that Toro or any Toro without shear pins, I would just put shear pins in place of those bolts. I have a 25+ year-old Ariens 24 inch sho snowblower that still runs like a top. I agree I would much rather break a shear pin than an expensive gearbox.

Nope…I’d put in shear pins. Thanks for sharing JB!

I bought a Toro 3 years ago it is a beast, it is however one of the commercial models, I purchased it for two reasons, one the chute control, two it auto turns. Yes Toro boasts about their nearly indestructible gearbox and not needing shear pins, we will see I haven't ingested anything yet to jam it up to see if the hype lives up to what Toro claims.

I actually like that makes me want it now the shere pins are a pain in the ass long as your fairly careful iv never damaged a gear box and I use grade 8-10 bolts in them

Can the auger bolts be replaced with shear pins?

Hey nice tutorial
My question is why did Toro have two different chutes options ??
One is all metal and the other is plastic above impeller then back to metal chute.
