The most expensive computer ever is likely the IBM Roadrunner, which was built for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration in 2008. The cost of the supercomputer is estimated to be around $133 million. The IBM Roadrunner is a hybrid computer that uses both conventional CPUs and graphics processing units (GPUs) to perform calculations, and it was the first computer to break the petaflop barrier (a thousand trillion calculations per second). It was used for research in nuclear weapons simulation, and is currently retired.
