Thats a pretty normal repair procedure here in the uk. Roof ladders and a slate hook / strap. Scaffolding to work on a roof is pretty much the only accepted "safe" way but it makes for a very expensive tile / slate repair lol.

I work at some heights in my days have really no fear but there is no way I would have dropped down that ladder without a safety line and retractable harness at least. I have seen it happen just like the hammer that probably broke some more slate on the lower roof. Falling that far would have been the reason why my workers compensation is so high. roofers die every year because of lack of safety especially on a 8 in 12 slate roof.

I did something similar once, but hung a rope from the roof hook and let it hang down beside the ladder just to make me feel better lol.

Does the slate hook have to be nailed into the batten under the slate?
