Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

Morgan Freeman listening with such an intense gaze. He didn't take one note, he must have a photogenic memory

Wow, you quoted (sort of) two of my favourite sayings: 'It's about the journey, not the destination' and 'Obsession is the path to sanity'. I'm knocking out lemons, figs and plums on my little desktop easel in bad light like there's no tomorrow, but you know what, each one is a little better than the last one. Loving it.

Chris, you’re my go to guy for oil painting techniques. I’ve been painting for 10 years and I’ve learned more from you over the past year than anyone! Keep up good work sir.

Thankyou so much for the advise.
My obsession with painting started only three years ago. The number of failed paintings and the money spent, made me feel like I should give up. But I just could not stop. I turned my bedroom into my art studio. I gave up part of my full time job so that I could paint for 8 hours a day. Lockdown came along and I was actually happy because it was just me, my dog and the eisel.
I found a job as a housekeeper locked away from the world for 6 months so that I could carry on painting. Friends thought I was having a mid life crisis. But in reality I found a passion that I hope will last for a lifetime.
So thankyou again for your sound advice and awesome videos.

I enjoy getting use to your unique personality - the jock who paints - and I appreciate your style. Easy to absorb the information. Rock on, bro!

I have learned so much from the paint coach and often I look back to my paintings from the past and find so many mistakes
Thank you for the conversation ✨

Chris my dude, I broke in my strada easel today in downtown Santa Barbara. It was my first time painting en plein air around hundreds of strangers during the Tuesday farmer’s market. The painting was mostly a first layer block in of some buildings/urban scene and although I’m not completely happy with how it’s looking so far, I absolutely lost myself in the process. I don’t know if I would have had the confidence to go out there and put paint to canvas without following your channel. Thank you for your wisdom and your continued coaching. Really appreciate you brother. Keep doing your thing.

You are absolutely right... it’s about the end process... not the end product. ☺️

Some of the best advice for would-be-but-afraid-to painters I've seen on YouTube. My worst paintings would never sell - but they're more valuable to me than the ones that did: because all of them taught me something.

My easel is an ironing board, my paintbrushes are my daughter's old acrylic ones, my palette is four cheap tubes of paint and I paint on canvas boards years old yet it is such a thrill when a contrast or colour or perspective works. I am at the consciously incompetent level of painting ie I have learnt enough about the process of painting to know what I'm not good at but with almost every painting there is something I learn or realise it's within my reach to do ... and that's what keeps me going. Your paint talks always resonate with me Chris and make me feel like there's someone else who has been on the journey I'm experiencing.

I have a tabletop easel in the kitchen (it has the best light), and a big easel in the bedroom for larger canvases. I use a rolling cart to move between the two. It's been a lesson in working with what you have - although I have feverish dreams about a big studio with ginormous windows, plenty of storage, and someone to clean up after me 😜

I am a professional welder-fabricator, who has a home tig shop where I also do metal art and sculpture...and I got to say, since I started oil painting 6 months ago, it has gotten in the way of my welding lol cuz every night, I want to finish or start my painting, which has had a different kind of subject every painting. I have to consciously tell myself, I have a commission sculpture to do, the painting has to wait! And of course my 5 year old son would rather me play in the yard than sit at the easel all night, so I wind up having to start at 9pm-11pm. Cuz I wake up for work at 4:30am lol anyway, just wanna say, I'm hooked like u were talking about, and I am greatful for that passion. Not many fell that, towards anything these days. Thanks!

I lived in Hollywood for a while, when me band moved out there. I don't know if you'd be familiar, but I used to live a block and a half North of Hollywood Blvd. on Whitley. Good times!

Good points! I belonged to the group of people who wanted to pain but never did. Until last christmas. After watching some videos by yourself and Ian Roberts I realized that painting is a process / skill that can be learned, rather than requiring mostly talent and/or great ideas.

I LOVE your message and manner of teaching. It’s so encouraging and kind. Thank you. I often tell my husband when I start a new painting that it takes a lot of courage...and I have to swallow hard to just start. But you are so right. It’s the doers that get better, not the critics. I find it all humbling. Jehovah made all of this...we are just little kids trying to imitate the harder work of making it all. For me...painting is saying, “Thank you...I appreciate your work”...to Him. It fills me with love. Who cares if I’m ‘bad’ at it?!
