An Unauthorized, and Not-So-Secret Plan to Reboot West Virginia: Sarah Halstead at TEDxLewisburg

Sarah Halstead is one of West Virginia's busiest and most visionary entrepreneurial thinkers. She combines her education and workforce development background with a passion for community and economic development. Sarah works with consumers, business owners, educators, policy makers and industry professionals to create unique opportunities for cross-industry dialog and learning experiences for diverse audiences. For more than a decade, she has focused on increasing awareness, technical knowledge and skills for building and retrofitting our places to be healthier, more efficient, affordable, beautiful, and entrepreneurial. Since joining Katalyst in 2006, she has championed statewide conversation about green and sustainable practices and innovation. She is the founding executive director of WVGreenWorks, a founding member of the West Virginia Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, and is a founding member of Create West Virginia, a statewide organization that is taking responsibility for introducing creative economy concepts to communities across the state. She is currently working with West Virginia State Universìty's Extension, Research and Public Service Department to build DígiSo, a digital and social media business incubator.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I love Sarah's autobiography. She tells about her awakening, and her progress from a typical West Virginian who never thought about leaving the state, to coming back with a world of experience and knowledge she is willing to share. She's one face of an important innovation initiative that offers West Virginians the opportunity to place themselves among the most creative communities in the world. She's a hard, selfless worker, and my hat's off to her.
