Different types of stress will be discussed in this lecture including normal stress, shear stress, and bearing stress. Three examples are also presented to study various types of stress in structures.

The learning outcomes are:
- Distinguish between shear stress and normal stress
- Describe bearing stress and calculate it in the contact area
- Use the stress equation to calculate stress in various elements
- Identify the double shear connection

0:00 Normal stress and shear stress
1:42 Bearing stress
2:36 Example 1
4:04 Example 2
8:17 Example 3
12:58 single shear and double shear connections

Note: On step (3) of the 3rd example (~minute 8), use the correct diameter of d=12 mm instead of 8 mm. The equation is correct but the value should be updated.

To be honest, this is the best explanation I have seen so far. The animation truly helps us see what goes on in these situations, it's very informative. Many thanks for your efforts!

Oh our Prof didn't mention that bearing is just normal force. This is why I was confused about bearing

I would like to see more examples for finding bearing stress and determining shear planes

there is error in the calculation, EX2, step 3 shear stress in the bolts, you use the value of thickness (8mm) instead of diameter of bolts (12mm) in area , thankx

Where did the 288mm^2 came from in 5:30?

Why shear stress area we need to use bolt surface area?

Please check if the area of the bolt in Example 3(case 2) is correct. To me it is 0.1963 in^2 not 0.0977 in^2.

A very simple detailed explanation that helps the student understand the lessons easily
thank you >>>>could I got your email, please?

Have a mistake in the diameter = 12mm not 8mm at minute 8:02

Come on, people need to stop believing that the stress is constant over a section. In real life it’s almost never the case. F/S is such a misleading way to see the stress. The tensor and Mohr’s circles is a much more physical and useful way to see and understand it.
