Mercedes-Benz Trucks Rearview Cameras Replace Mirrors

The new Mercedes-Benz Actros truck launched last year replaces the conventional rearview mirrors with the MirrorCam camera system. A standard feature on all Actros models, the rearview cameras are mounted on the roof frame and are connected to displays located inside the cabin on the A-pillars.

Spent a week driving one, they do have some useful safety features but they can't beat mirrors. What you see in a mirror is just as you'd see it if you was looking straight at it, these camera are an electronic interpretation digitally displayed on a screen, you'll never have the same high definition as eyesight, you can't judge depth, LED lights from traffic behind flicker in them, angles reversing are hard to judge, in some light conditions it's hard to see if a fellow trucker has flashed you clear after overtaking. From drivers I've spoken to so far not one has said they prefer them to mirrors. My opinion, give me mirrors anyday!

Why don't they make a trailer mounted rear-view camera? It would make backing up to loading docks a breeze...

Very nice! They should adapt this to all trucks. Great job MB!

Just had a driver turn sharp left off a bay, knocked my camera off, totally snookered now, waiting for recovery, can't get the parts.

'it's got no mirrors'. English: It doesn't have any mirrors

Something else to go wrong that can't be fixed unless the technician has the exact same version of software on his laptop that the last technician had where the truck was built.

Great idea on paper but useless from driver stand point.

They’re the worst idea. I hate them. Still prefer good old mirrors.

Great job, we also have this kind system for trucks, and with AI functions now!

Awesome.
Now sat in the red lion waiting for recovery, because my nearside screen is blank.
Tech for techs sake

An absolute hindrance… can’t see blue emergency lights or amber lights they all look white, most car headlights appear to flash, blurry view muted colours, can’t see the unit and the trailer in together when reversing and can’t tell if it’s straight or not… seriously I’m not just moaning for the sake of it these are inferior in so many ways and add anxiety and complexity to a shift, a huge step backwards, I was looking forward to these, I am absolutely disappointed.

drove my first one today and after 28 years of aiming a truck, this has to be the worst addition ever.. but what do you expect from the play station generation..live in your mirrors not on screen
expect more carnage on the roads

No good for reversing, no good at night, difficult to judge distances when overtaking.

Not a improvement at all. I am just wondering how they got the government to approve the use of this hindrance .Can't think of anything but money handed over

No good for night trunk drivers, no mention of the flicker rate, this is not recommended by opticians as you should not be 3 foot, arms length from any screen. Did Merc take any advise on driver health before putting this on the market, if so what are there findings on optical changes for night driver's.
Notice ot only shows how it can be useful for security not night driving.
The potential damage to drivers are, headaches, reduced eye vision, sleep problems, and costly visits to the opticians and doctors, probably sacked for refusing to drive a dangerous vehicle. BAD IDEA FOR DRIVING AND NO REAL NEED, it is also a distraction and will prove expensive for companies paying compensation to sick drivers via a law suit...
