Paul's vision was rendered even more chilling in retrospect given how his duel with Jamis went. Paul foresaw the horror of the Fremen Jihad back in the Stil Tent with Jessica, the galactic scale suffering and death enacted by an army of fanatics killing in his name, and yet he chose to fight Jamis himself instead of declining the Amtal challenge, and then chose to kill Jamis and so set aside his former identity as Paul Atredies and embrace his transformation into the Kwizatz Haderach, setting his feet firmly on the path that he now knows leads to genocide. It was a huge character moment for Paul, and one that makes it clear that he is not some virtuous hero, but rather something much darker and more ambiguous - Frank Herbert's original theme of the profound dangers of charismatic leaders realised on screen.

Knowing what I know from the books. I cried a little bit at that part. Timothée Chalamet portraying that weight of death and destruction of an entire galaxy on his shoulders got me.

One of the best changes from the books was the alternate future where Jamis became his trusted guide and companion. I'd say it's even a huge missed opportunity in the novels to effectively show just how powerful Paul's prescient episodes can be. When he sees them, he's actually able to live in those moments. This time, he really was "a friend of Jamis". It's not just a simple iconic line from the books anymore. It's a heartbreaking revelation that their friendship only bore fruit in another possible future.

To a large degree, once Paul reaches a point of no return, which is likely around the time he kills Jamis, Paul has little control over how Fremen view him. His only choice is to fail and die, or to survive and become the Messiah. After that, even if he told the Fremen that he is not divine and to not follow him, they wouldn't listen. Life of Brian comes to mind when addressing that very point.

Paul's vision in the tent was my favourite scene in the movie. I'm so incredibly hyped for the second part, it can't come soon enough!

I like how the scenes of friendship with Jamis both add to the tragedy of the duel, but also show that his visions are *possibilities*, not yet certainty.

Paul's vision in the movie is pretty self explanatory. He even tells the audience what he's seeing in a good chunk of the visions. My wife who never read the books or watched the older movie version even understood.

I really like how in th movie When Paul talks about his plan to Liet Kynes in the movie he's like "hey did you notice how I fit the description of the fremen messiah? what if I used that to my advantage?" And Jessica looks at him horrified fully understanding what he wants to do

I finished Children of Dune last night, and I am still trying to absorb it all and process what I finished reading. I can’t begin to understand how Frank Herbert was able to conceive of everything he did and express it as he does. It’s unbelievable. Like you said before Quinn, I seriously don’t think the general public is ready if they manage to make movies past book 2 😂 Keep up the great content good sir.

Paul visions is my favorite part of the movie.
I've read books many times, enjoyed them greatly but did NOT understand them 👀
After watching this movie I finally GOT IT... I finally understood what these books were about.
The Holy War vision scene (in the tent) is my absolute favorite. Every time I saw it in the cinema, it was almost a religious experience for me. Absolutely amazing 🌌

Paul's vision of the jihad during the tent scene is my absolute favorite part of the movie. The fear, the despair, the anger, the helplessness... It was such a rollercoaster of emotions and Lil Timmy Tim conveyed all those emotions extremely well, and more! Ngl... i teared up a bit during that part. Timothee sure has come a long way from rapping about Statistics, lol.

In any case, my take on Paul's decision to stay on Arrakis wasn't necessarily one of full awareness of an absolute future of violence. During the whole movie, Paul doesn't yet understand the nature of his visions. He still hasn't realized that to see the future is to be trapped by it. He saw a vision of Jamis killing him when he tried to make a frontal attack right after he dodged Jamis' attack. In the actual duel, Paul remembered this and changed his tactics, effectively changing the outcome of his vision. Or so he thought. What Paul didn't know, and could not have any way of knowing at this time is that this decision would further propel him further into the jihad.

When Paul actively stays on Arrakis, he does so under the assumption that he could avert such a galactic crisis. *Spoiler alert* Remember that in the books, Paul would constantly look into the time winds, looking for all possible futures in the hopes of stopping the jihad. It was only much later that he has come to realize that he cannot stop it.

At least that's how I understood his decision to stay.

This is why I believe that general audiences enjoyed it because their brains recognized the importance of the vision, and the outcome vs vision in the climax. Its very well filmed lol

I got an ad for Dune before this.
"Balanced, as all things should be." But in all seriousness though, thumbnail is probably my fave scene in the movie.

Even in Part 3 of the book, Paul sees, knows exactly where the ‘choices’ lead long term in a vision during the Feyd-Rautha fight and walks them. Determinism and Free Will are eloquently explored by Herbert throughout the books. Even more so with Leto II. The momentum Paul had leading to the Jamis fight was against any ‘choice’ he appeared to have. The BG laid religion, the conflict of the houses and empire, even the thousands of years of genetics in Paul. Reminds me of the Oracle line to Neo, “Because you didn't come here to make the choice, you've already made it. You're here to try to understand why you made it.”

In the end, Paul's vision showed him two things. He foresaw the Jihad. He knew it was imminent, it was coming in his lifetime. He sought a path to stop it, he couldn't find it. That terrified, frustrated, and angered him. It HAD to happen. Nothing Paul could do would stop it. Even if he committed suicide it would still occur in his name. Second...he saw Kralizec. He saw the same thing his son Leto II saw. He also saw the course that would prevent it. He couldn't stop the Jihad, and the necessity of taking the "other skin" he couldn't face, he was repelled by the idea. He went into the desert and became the Prophet. Leto found and confronted him with all of it. Paul was devestated by Leto's choice to "take the skin". Leto assures him that the Golden Path was the only way to prevent extinction. Leto has to undeify his father...and become God. Paul's vision was heartbreaking..far from a benefit it was a curse to him, and his son paid the price. Thanks to Frank Herbert for such an amazing tale.

One thing that is also important to keep in mind is that it is clear in the book that WITHOUT the Missionaria Protectiva legends the Bene Geserit had setup on Arrakis, Paul and Jessica would have been murdered in the desert by the Fremen for their water. They have to constantly maintain true to those legends and are tested many times by the Fremen. So Paul's choice is really between his and his mother's death and his holy war. This shows us ultimately how human Paul really is because he wouldn't and couldn't sacrifice his and his mothers' lives for the lives of the untold millions.

I loved this scene in the movie.

Before the tent, I was pleased but not overly impressed by timothee, but after the outburst against lady Jessica after seeing the possible horrors really sold it to me.

I can't stop thinking about the dune universe now it's engulfed my thoughts this past week.

It would be awesome if you could make a video about how prescience works in this universe. The limitations and pitfalls of prescience are discussed in great details in the book and it would be interesting for non-book readers to get an understanding of it

The way Paul was describing his Jihad in his name was striking
