An easy introduction to the work of Edith Wharton is her very short novel “Summer”. Set in a quiet small town in upstate New York, a young girl’s summer seems much brighter when she catches the eye of a visiting university student. Also, Wharton’s short story “Roman Fever” has quite a deliciously ironic twist as two middle aged society ladies recall a summer they spent in Italy 20 years earlier.

Such a great list! I resisted reading Frankenstein for so long but it's a firm favourite now. I'm really looking forward to reading The Yellow Wallpaper soon.

Thank you for putting together this list! I would also like to add Passing by Nella Larson. It is very short and can be read in a day. It's about a Black woman who is "passing" as white in 1920s America. The story begins when she reconnects with an old friend from her childhood. Its about identity, race, and class.

Wind in the Willows is also one of my absolute favorites - such a lovely, funny, touching tale of friendship and mischief! I also like to read Breakfast at Tiffany’s in summertime - an easy read and the atmosphere in that book feels like a hot, sticky summer day.

The Pearl by John Steinbeck is one of my favourites!
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
