The economic impact of the Hong Kong protests | DW News

Protests in Hong Kong have prompted China to speed up its vast regional development program, the Greater Bay Area Project. Beijing has long planned this, but believes the promise of strong economic growth will ease anger in Hong Kong - which will lose its special status in 28 years, when there will no longer be a guarantee of the "one country, two systems" policy.

The government wants to make Hong Kong a key part of a cluster of cities in the Pearl River Delta to create vibrant economic areas. Chinese president Xi Jinping describes the Greater Bay Project as central to China's "Great National Rejuvenation." Hong Kong is just a part of a greater plan.

Because of this massive protest and the Sino-US trade war, Hong Kong has lost its function as a financial center. Hong Kong's future economic outlook will be different from before!

It is the people that make a place unique. It takes ten years to grow trees, but a hundred years to rear people. The Chinese people could never replace the Hong Kong people. At least not in 28 years.

Hong Kong will be happy to see Shenzhen would be opened up as same as a free city with the same legal structure. If China genuinely establishes an independent judiciary system in Shenzhen and free flow of information and speech, that would be a good news. But will China introduce an independent judiciary system and rule of law in Shenzhen? Will Beijing allows ppl to enjoy free flow of information, including no censorship in media and Internet access? In the past, Beijing highly publicised to develop Shanghai, Beijing Hongan New Zone, Shenzhen Qianhai zone to offer tax-free or relief and so and so. How come these have never successfully replaced HK? Because HK has an independent judiciary system, rule of law, recognised legal practitioners, established financial system which guaranteed by the rule of law. Do you think these can be done overnight ?

HK economy is in decline and people's income is 50% to 30% for the last two months. China is injecting $2.5B to help small business and low income families. Students are back to school and they do not have much time to come out and causes more damages to HK economy.

HK is suffering from man-made calamity. It might be the only advanced economy committing suicide while there is no economic recession.

I'm Hong Konger, thanks for your consideration. We need German, French, European, Japanese...all rich countries to put terms or deals on China in order to protect Hong Kong. CCP army is coming here for massacre. HK is The new West Berlin under Communist sarging.

BTW, Sorry for all matters in airport on that day.
Best Wishes
