We have to accept that we have sleep walked into this situation and mostly it's been caused by greed. Buying parts from China has been the preferred route for many tech companies in the US and Europe for decades. It's the cheap option compared to making the parts in the US or Europe. Some are now being made in Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan etc... and increasingly India. But, it seems that to be effective, the bans should happen immediately and apply retrospectively. Introducing a ban in 2030 seems to be shutting the gate after the horse has bolted. These bans should also be introduced on evidence based reasoning. Where is the evidence ? There is a similar situation with DJI Drones that may be banned in the US, again with no supporting evidence.

As a society we are probably more vulnerable than ever before. How many of us are truly able to fend for ourselves? Even if an individual rejects the modern smart technology they are still stuck with their ability to use cash being restricted to the point where it makes life very difficult for them. All my wealth is just a number on a computer somewhere - scary if I think about it too much.

Smokescreen to protect US jobs as the equivalent chinese product is much cheaper. Plenty of current tech elsewhere to worry about with regards to national security.

Feels like more of a headline grabbing policy statement that will be fall at the first when they try to implement it in any meaningful way. How far are they going to take this ban... my 80 year old father has a Merlin pacemaker that connects to a wirelessly to a monitoring box in his bedroom and then to the internet. I'd place good money on it having Chinese RF components even though it was made in the USA.... though it might explain why he occasionally says "I need your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle" and calls out for a John Connor in his

We really do need simpler versions of cars, and they could be electric power but no gadgets. My family fleet of five is staying with us as long as possible.

The youngest is 2011 and none has built in sat nav or any gadgets. I have a simple scan tool for reading error codes and I can do pretty much anything other than flash the CPU.

For navigation I can read maps and I have a "smart" phone, I don't need to have my car updated via Wifi and I certainly don't need infotainment whatever the hell that is! Oh, and if I need to switch on the air con I have a button for that, you know, a toggle switch I can flick or press. You can stick your tablet interface where the sun don't shine.
