I can't believe all the people saying it's not that much better. That one second is HUGE, about a 25% improvement, which can easily make the difference in a raid. Not only that, but it has increased range which allows you to repair things you literally *cannot* reach with the normal hammer.

you can craft normal hammer with wood but garry's hammer need 20 metal
