Dr. Ali, I am comforted by hearing your very relatable stories of "failure". Rejection and not achieving goals can be so crushing to self-esteem. Life is long and I have struggled through much of it which gave plenty of opportunity for perceived failures and also, definitive successes....but mostly struggles. When you're in the ditch and feeling the pain from hurtful words or reviews from other people, it's so important to hear those voices of support and encouragement. That's the thing that kept me moving forward. Thank you for sharing!

I'm watching this right now. And I also had same experience like you. I got rejected from every college I applied to in 2018. It was really hard for me. But fortunately, my family was very supportive. Then, a year after that, I got accepted into my current college. Thank to this experience, because it made me learn how to study better. 🌻✨

Terrific topic to cover and explore. Thanks for candidly sharing about your academic and professional development from HS through grad school - very inspiring stuff! This topic translates with profound relevance to virtually every profession and stage of a person's life.

As a side thought, the concept of"failure" could be explored in much greater depth through the interdisciplinary psychological domains of perception, learning, growth and most importantly, change.

Thanks for another excellent video! Having a supportive environment is so important. I came from a working class, immigrant single parent household. Growing up I didn't know heck about support, I didn't even know how to ask for help. Shame was an over whelming emotion for me growing up. I was very lucky that I met my first mentor in my mid 20s, with his professional and life skills I realized just how healing having a compassionate supportive environment is. A lot less shame demon now!

Thanks for this! Recovering from failure is super important. Like you, I also had a problem with finishing up my first dissertation. It had grown out of a project that I had been working on before. But I couldn't get the models to work, and I was burning out.

My supervisor allowed me to start on a new project, and I found a thesis writing workshop group that really helped out. Much of the discussion that we had in the group was similar to the ideas that you were presenting here. And also that I bet your coach discussed.

Having the right environment and the right mindset. It really goes a long way.

when mindset stuck in negativity . iwas trying to make it positive through thouggts only. this continued for like one year then it struck that i have to get my body moving and take some actions knowing that i will fail. i still not reached what i wanted but slowly moving towards it . snails speed . but moving .

It's fantastic to hear how you developed after your failure. It almost seems that your failure was vital for your success. I often feel that failure it an imperative ingredient for development. Also, I love Carol Dweck!

What makes you feel like your abilities are stuck and how have you grown from your failures?

I feel shame because, i failed in my first year (medical school), I recover from the failure and am doing pretty fine in the years after, but the shame never goes. I don't know why, it's all about the fear about being a bad physician in the future and the kind of Qs " what if i hurt someone's lover or sister, mother.."
don't get me wrong i worked and i work hard to compensate and learn the material even better than the first time, but shame lasts for a long time...

Can you do a video on stress and how it can be paralyzing?

Great video and thanks for sharing your experience! What's your opinion on the controversy of Dweck's mindsets and their lack of predictability? There have been a few large scale replications that haven't found an effect of growth mindsets on academic success.
