The Seventh Veil is a 1945 British melodrama film directed by Compton Bennett and starring James Mason and Ann Todd. It was made by Ortus Films (a company established by producer Sydney Box) and released through General Film Distributors in the UK and Universal Pictures in the United States. The screenplay concerns Francesca (Todd), a brilliant concert pianist who attempts suicide while she is being treated for a disabling delusional disorder centered on her hands that makes it impossible for her to play. A psychiatrist uses hypnosis to uncover the source of her crippling fear and to reveal, one by one, the relationships that have enriched and troubled her life. When the last “veil” is removed, her mind is clear. She regains the ability to play and knows whom she loves best. The film's title comes from the metaphor, attributed to the fictional psychiatrist, that while Salome removed all her veils willingly, human beings fiercely protect the seventh and last veil that hides their deepest secrets, and will only reveal themselves completely under narcosis.

I am eighty-five now. As a boy, I watched this film so long ago. Since then I have always remembered this as possibly the finest film, I have ever seen. Tonight I wondered if it could possibly be available on YouTube. I tried, and voila, it is. It may be a well-worn expression but sincere - They don't make them like this anymore. Superb.

This intricate movie systematically explores the dangerous world of high expectations and low self esteem, where one's life revolves around the expectations and demands of others and where self may or may not discover its own real essence. Some of us know this painful territory all too well, and the flashbacks can be haunting.

I didn’t flinch or cringe . He asks if he she’d like to stroke the cat and she says no because she doesn’t like cats… what’s the big deal ?

OMG! in light of what we now know about domestic violence, the ending is seriously creepy. Not her behavior, but that the movie frames it like some sort of triumph. And the first question he asks his 14? 16? year old ward when she stands in front of him? Re-watch and listen to that. Try not to flinch...or cringe.

This is one seriously wacked out melodrama. I'm still a little slack-jawed at what the writers made these characters do, and that's not really meant as a compliment. And this won an Oscar for, wait for it, Best Screenplay!

There's no way to detail this without dropping a bunch of spoilers. Suffice to say that Ann Todd (37 at the time of making this film) plays a 15-yr-old through to her mid-20s, who has been taken in by her cold, manipulative control freak of a second cousin (James Mason), who heaps terrible psychological abuse on her when he's not totally neglecting her and won't even accept a hug from her. But he does mold her into an accomplished concert pianist. Shades of Whiplash here.

I could go on, through her first love affair with an American musician, broken up of course by toxic Mason who continues to hold an inexplicable power over her, and then a completely unromantic romance with her portrait painter. But I won't, for one thing because the motives behind so many of each characters actions are just plain nonsensical and inconsistent. I can't remember a movie where I just stopped so often to marvel at characters' motivations careening over the road and even into ditches.

Anyways, by a bunch of contrivances, mostly orchestrated via a) soap-y plot turns and b) her shrink Herbert Lom, all three men are present at the big finale when she is going to choose the one she really wants. One guess who she picks. Redemption never comes too late I guess.

I know it's tricky to judge old films through modern eyes, but there's a limit to that. The extreme male toxic behaviour on display here had to have been proscribed even in mid-40s England. I hope.

It's all so ridiculous and unhinged that the nuttiness becomes entertaining in its own right.

This is seriously tripped out, asking an actress in her late thirties to play a teenage girl in school uniform. I've always imagined Englishmen keep a gimp suit in their wardrobe the same way a Scot keeps a kilt in his. I'm now convinced of it.
