Two promising areas emerging in biofeedback are heart rate variability training and respiratory training. This program will introduce the physiology of heart rate variability (HRV) and its significance in medical research. The presenter will describe HRV biofeedback and the resonance frequency protocol. He will review evidence-based applications of HRV biofeedback and analyze the mechanisms for the therapeutic benefit of HRV training. He will introduce HRV mobile devices and smart phone apps and summarize recent research studies applying mobile devices to diving anxiety, test anxiety, clinical anxiety disorders, and female sexual arousal disorder.

Next, he will briefly describe the physiology of respiration and introduce respiratory biofeedback. He will summarize the research on capnometry-based respiratory biofeedback for anxiety disorders, including a recent study applying a mobile capnometry device to post-traumatic stress disorder. Attendees will benefit from better understanding of HRV and respiratory biofeedback and from exposure to available mobile devices and apps for training outside the office.
