History Of Windows Screensavers 📺✅

1992's Windows 3.1 introduced screensavers to Windows out of the box (although they first appeared in an optional update for Windows 3 in 1991, called Multimedia Extensions, that OEMs could choose to install). These full-screen, animated images/text aimed to prevent so-called “burn-in” on CRT monitors. Screensavers such as Flying Windows & 3D Maze became popular with users over time. Watch to learn more!

With thanks to @nostalgiachannelnc for the screensaver footage.

Corrections:
0:03 Technically, screensavers debuted in the Multimedia Extensions update for Windows 3 in 1991. This was an optional update to Windows 3 that OEMs could choose to install, and included a variety of multimedia content. It would be more correct to say that Windows 3.1 introduced screensavers *by default*, out of the box.
2:02 Of course, I meant to say "predecessor"!

And now with laptops starting to ship with OLED panels which also suffer from a sort of burn in over time, screensavers are once again starting to serve a purpose

I used to think as a kid that Windows Maze and other screensavers were curious mini-games that our parents installed to keep us distracted. I remember seeing more than 20 minutes that maze, haha

A couple errors here:
1. The screensavers introduced in Windows 3.1 would remain up to Windows XP, not Windows Me.
2. Windows XP and Windows Logo screensavers from Windows XP and Vista completely ignored. These screensavers would also be used as part of the default theme and on the Windows Logon screen.

Even if CRT monitors aren't a thing anymore, screensavers are still essential for LCD and OLED monitors to this day. It's cool that screensavers began over three decades ago. Great work!
