Mech. engineering sounds good and all but universities are expensive af, and engineering is too advanced for me, so instead i wanted to be a welder and I'm going to a community college which is way cheaper!

If your degree leads u to a specialized skilled sets with demand & not enough supply, then Mechanical Engineering degree is good for you, otherwise it is delusional in case you do not have specific interests within the discipline.

With a degree in ME u are at risk of losing track because it is wide field unlike many other engineering degrees.
It is important to know what u want to do before u enter the program.

U want to produce mechanical parts & assemble them. And do it efficiently & effectively. Go into manufacturing, production, metrology, designing jigs & fixtures, Six Sigma & process control, CAD/CAM, Numerical controls machines & your course work should be hands on.

If u are interested in designing & implementation of mechanical power systems & HVAC, then your course work should be accordingly designed & should include as many labs as possible.

If you are interested in machinery & mechanical design, u should make sure u learn to be adept in using CAD hands on. You should aim to become expert on design of experiments, learn application of stress analysis, vibrations & system or system dynamic analysis.

Design your path through the 4 or 5 years before u start your degree in ME.

Also, make sure the program u attend is equally accredited by whoever has accredited the program offered by top school in your state. MIT in Massachusetts University of IL Urbana Champaign. Otherwise don’t waste your time & energy.

Make sure u pass EIT before u graduates.

This strategy will make your degree as valuable as MIT.
