The late singer, Selena, grew up not speaking Spanish. She learned her Spanish language songs phonetically and then learned to speak Spanish.

I think people who are overly obsessed with this need to go touch grass

The same people who are pressed about Jenna claiming to be Ltina are probably worshipping Kamala as a black woman

People from latin america view being “latino” as culture, while people from USA think of it as race, thats the difference

“Latina enough”, “not Latina enough”, what even is that? Does it even matter? Who has time to think of all these petty things? The divisiveness continues.

I’m Indian, but born and raised in the U.S. In the 00s they said you’re not American enough. In the 10s they said you’re not Indian enough. This is coming from other Indian people I’ve met in the U.S. I’m done trying to please people.

People should be more worried about the quality of someone's character and less about the color of someone's skin.

when will people understand that latin/hispanic is not a race, and you can still be a white (or black) person WHILE being latina?

It is extremely funny that they say that about Jenna Ortega, but not Kamala Harris.

This blows my mind. I just went to college with a Korean girl who didn’t speak any Korean. She grew up in the US and was adopted. Was she not Korean because she didn’t speak the language?? SMH…

As a white latina ive always been called a gringa or weda for not speaking the language. Yesterday a lady told me to go back to Mexico and i felt validated, like "you can tell im hispanic?" 😂 i took it as a compliment. #secure the boarder 🤣

Going by that standard then 99% of “African-Americans” can’t be called African-American either.

This is the exact stuff that Selena Quintanilla was fighting against during the entirety of her career. Back when we were “too white” for the browns and “too brown” for the whites. It’s something American born Hispanics have always dealt with

Just ridiculous. These people need to get a life. Too much time on their hands to be on the internet judging others. LAME

The way she gasped. She was so genuinely happy to hear that

A lot of people (mostly gringos) are confusing race with cultural identity, latino is not a race, nor is it really tied to ancestry, it's tied to culture, and most of our people are mad because people claim this cultural identity without actually putting effort to understand or be part of it, it's specially bad when it comes from gringos that use it as a shield because "they're part of an oppressed minority" but ask them to put effort in learning our language and culture and they will most likely say they don't care about "crime-ridden" countries, and fair, no one would ask you to care if it wasn't because you're claiming and identity you dont even respect. The world latino is tied to the fact that our current dominant language is LATIN derived, tho the word is mostly used to refer to only southamerican Latinoamérica, and our countries have claimed the word and tied to our culture, so no you don't have to speak Spanish to be latino, but you do need to take part in our traditions to claim to be one.
Btw, the word gringo, at least in my country is used to describe people who are ignorant of someones culture.

I've been called a "fake Latina" my whole life just cause I don't speak nor understand Spanish fluently, and can't eat a lot of spicy foods due to digestive issues....it's the dumbest and most unnecessary thing to police/gatekeep ever.

Bro what? T-T It's giving me flashbacks to how Disney fired the original actors from Lilo and Stitch's live-action because despite them coming from Hawaii, they weren't dark enough

Edit: I've seen people accusing me of lying in the comments. I remember seeing the video covering this somewhere. If I can remember the source I'll link it but I remember a few people were saying this happened so. And honestly, it strikes me as something Disney would do which is why I believed it.

The problem is the fact that we're acting like it matters in the first place.

I served in the Marines with a Latino who couldn't speak Spanish. He used to get ribbed about it alot. Especially since we were stationed in Puerto Rico.
One day I made a comment that it was strange. He looked at me and asked my heritage background. I said I was mostly Czech and Norwegian. Then he asked if I could speak either of those languages. I replied no.
So he asked, "Then why do you expect me to?"
He had a valid point. I, personally, never mentioned it to him again.
