I'm an Asian American, but I admire Gina Rodriguez much! She is so intelligent and has so much class. Her response here was perfect. She could not have said it any better!

I'm full Puerto Rican but my skin in so light that I'm always mistaken for being Caucasian. My family speaks Spanish so I can pick up a few things but I can't speak the language fluently nor can I understand it fluently especially spoken by a person with a native tongue. My whole life I was told I'm not a 'real latina', even once by a good friend of mine! But after seeing this video, I know now that there's nothing anyone can say to me that's going to change where I come from and where my ancestors were raised. I always thought you had to be of a dark complexion and be able to speak Spanish fluently to be considered 'latina' but even women who filled those requirements (such as Gina) get put down as well. This needs to change.

I took a linguistics class and I just want to encourage anyone in a bilingual household to teach your child both languages! Research shows that children can actually decipher different languages and never get confused or develop an accent! I grew up speaking only Spanish to my parents and English to my siblings and friends and I don't have an accent! I'm so grateful my parents taught me Spanish! :)

I relate to Gina so much. I was raised with English as my first language for the same reasons. Also, I am biracial and my mother does not speak Spanish. & I was always ridiculed for that. & I hated it. So thank you Gina. For helping us young Latinas comfortable with the way we were raised and proving it to us that it doesn't make us any less of what we are.

I agree with what she is saying but that's not the case always you don't necessarily have to have English as your first language for you to speak it correctly my parents were born in Mexico and their first language is Spanish so anytime they speak English they speak it with an accent. When I was growing up they only spoke Spanish to me, Spanish is my first language and I thank them that they only spoke to me in Spanish because I am bilingual. I learned English when I was four years old and I went to preschool, my teacher didn't speak Spanish and I didn't speak English but I learned to speak it fluently, I don't speak English with an accent most people don't believe that Spanish is my first language because I speak English so well and when I have kids I am definitely not going to speak English to them I am only teaching them Spanish and they can learn English when they go to school like I did.

Spanish was my first language, learned english when I started school. Now as an adult I dont have an accent when I speak english. Thats a misconception parents have. You still get the advantage to be bilingual.

she is such a good role model! I freaking love her, and she makes me proud to be latina! I am Mexican and I don't speak spanish, my parents didn't teach us for the reasons she has explained here. love you gina!

I really like Gina, but my kids are speaking English at school and Spanish at home. I know they are born in this beautiful country such a bless, but when I get to visit Perú or Mexico, I want my kids to talk to their relatives, I won't be translating for them.
