Meanwhile, we non-American (christian) audience are just grateful that we have electricity and internet connection at all to be able to enjoy our favorite show. We don’t make a fuss about secondary things as long as the spirit of the Gospel is preached to our people. If we need to know what really happened, we just open our bible. 😊
Peace, from Madagascar 🇲🇬

It's quite simple...in the Bible, there were 72 other disciples who followed Jesus. Matthias was almost certainly one of them.

But to include Matthias from the beginning would have spread out characters even more than they already are. We struggle constantly to avoid being spread too thin, and adding yet another character just to fit a timeline mentioned about Matthias would have watered down the show and the character. And making him Avner, one of John's followers, would have also not fit the biblical narrative. The only way to specifically fit that verse about Matthias would have been to have him as one of Jesus' disciples from the beginning, and we just weren't going to do that.

And where we've ended up is giving Matthias FAR more agency, impact, and depth than the Bible gives him. So I feel great about all the attention we're giving Matthias, while not violating anything theological or doctrinal. As we've always said, our larger goal is to communicate capital-T Truth than to be a historical re-enactment.

Folks will go to the Bible as they always do, anyone who didn't know who Matthias was (and trust me, that's probably half the audience) will see what the Bible says, and they'll say, "oh, so he was there from the beginning as opposed to joining late. Got it."

I don't disagree it's not historically accurate, I just disagree it's a problem or that it "violates the character and intentions of Jesus and the gospels, " as we always say we seek to avoid.

You are so faithful to the truth; the Word of God. Thank you for doing this program. We don’t want non-believers to believe everything in the show as truth. It’s not. I always learn so much more thru your program. Thank you, thank you!!!

Blessings!
I’m not disappointed at all. The Chosen is just a show, entertainment. They are not acting out the Bible. Season 5 is so good!

maybe Nicodemus had Matthias watching over Jesus from a distance to protect himself from being found a follower after he did not go with him at the well. And maybe he followed at a distance watched everything took notes about everything but he wasn't necessarily in the big group openly . What if he was with them but not with them like in the group itself but watching them from a distance taking notes for Nicodemus and all so he could keep tabs on Jesus while he was away

So just curious what’s the name of the actor who played Matthias? I can’t find it anywhere online

They can retcon it later and add Mathias into scenes that have happened in earlier seasons. They never showed Jesus’s baptism on screen, so they could write a scene and put him there witnessing the event. They could have him at the sermon of the mount. It’s an easy fix.

It could also be that they’re weren’t always sure about doing Acts, but once they decided to do it, they had to go back and close the gap. Either way, I’m glad they tried.

Okay... I looked it up and did some research...

Matthias was not mentioned anywhere in the four Gospels. He was first mentioned in the Book of Acts.

They don't say how long Matthias was watching for Nicodemus... he could have been watching for him since season 1 when Nico decided to not join the group, they just didn't start showing hints of him until Season 4. From watching Season 5 twice already, I don't recall them establishing a time frame of when Matthias started reporting on Jesus' ministry back to Nico. Maybe we'll see some flashbacks in Season 6.

It’s a show, never lose sight that the entertainment and drama is what sells this as well. Now if this show leads to anyone to build a relationship with Christ then that’s fantastic!

Honestly if it wasn’t for The Chosen I wouldn’t even know about Matthias at all! And I grew up in church. What the chosen has done for me sometimes it has forced me to go to my Bible and see what the writers put in and what the Bible says - basically it has made me read my Bible a lot more carefully. I get your point but we also can’t get lost in fine details and lose the overall important point of the show - yes it is a show, it’s not infallible

I completely agree. This is an easy fix. Early in Season 6, have Matthias do a couple of flashbacks - walking with JTB, Andrew, and Phillip. Another flashback to him standing outside watching Jesus and Nicodemus pulled him aside, they have a short conversation, Matthias nods his head (agreeing to record the signs and wonders for Nicodemus to study). Nicodemus smiles, and back to present day.

Just make the biblical connection between the biblical text and the story line! Easy peasy!

I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for the content you share. I appreciate the way you draw connections between The Chosen and the Bible—those correlations are meaningful and helpful, and it’s one of the reasons I continue to watch your videos.

At one point, I even prayed about supporting you on Patreon. However, I wanted to share something honestly: it can be disheartening and a bit triggering when the show is criticized for not aligning perfectly with how you might have chosen to portray things. While I understand everyone has their own perspective, it feels at times like the heart of The Chosen is being overlooked.

As Dallas Jenkins has repeatedly explained from the beginning, The Chosen is a dramatic series—not a word-for-word reenactment of Scripture—and viewers are encouraged to return to the Bible for accuracy. If the show had followed Scripture exactly as written without any narrative development, it likely would have ended in just a few episodes.

I realize this sentiment isn’t directed at you alone—some of the comments from self-proclaimed fans can feel similarly critical. My thought is, if someone doesn’t like the show, it’s perfectly fine not to watch.

That said, I continue to be amazed by how many lives around the world The Chosen has touched—bringing people closer to God, drawing in new believers, and reigniting faith in those who had drifted. I count myself among them. The spirit of the show is having a profound impact, and I believe that is something to be celebrated.

With respect and appreciation!!!

@0:33 Lemme stop you there.... Mathias is NOT a Biblical "CHARACTER" ... the Bible doesn't have "Characters" .... fictional stories have "Characters" ... the Bible is a collection of Historical Writings. Mathias is a real person. Just wanted to clear that up for people watching.

Sorry... I disagree with you. If Matthias was a servant of Nicodemus (for his connection to Nicodemus - Season 1 Episode 1) ... then he came to believe in Jesus, along with continuing to serve Nicodemus by 'following Jesus' literally... why is that not a plausible option to explain his being there from the beginning? His 'relationship' with Jesus and the original 12 hasn't be on screen for reasons Dallas explained. Mathias is not mentioned in the Gospels .... that's truth.

To be fair, not even the literal Bible dramatizations that existed before ever thought to show Matthias sporadically throughout the show. I don't know if anyone ever did the amount of early thinking about Matthias to make him part of the ministry from the beginning.

(There is a general mistake in Christian thinking that believes Jesus had exactly 12 disciples/ 12 followers. But several things - like mentioning women traveling with Jesus, like Jesus sending out 72 disciples, like saying Matthias is one of the disciples that has been part of the group from the beginning - shows Jesus had way more followers than that, he just selected 12 of them for a special purpose.)

My 2 cents (take it or leave it 😂):
They probably weren't planning on doing the book of Acts as a show and therefore didn't think it necessary to put Mathias in The Chosen. But now that Acts is going to be a show, they definitely needed to introduce him. Your idea that he could have been the one John the Baptizer sent is great, but it's something that obviously didn't cross their minds, or they didn't want to use that actor as Mathias moving forward.
